TK Days: Sept. 16 – 20

Start with “Hello” Week

This week our school is being a part of something that could be life-changing for many students or even for one student. We are participating in “Start With Hello Week” as a part of the No Place for Hate Campaign. You may have seen some of the emails and may have skimmed the content, but it is something designed to remind us of inclusiveness. Though isolation and depression may not seem to happen often in younger grades like TK, the act and feeling of responsibility to include all members and value others (even those we may not agree with or those who are different than us) could start to make a real change in our world. 

This week our school is making it a priority to focus on how we can not only be a part of this movement, but truly strengthen these types of character traits in our students. We want EBS to be a place where people feel welcome, invited and safe. Belonging is one of the core basic needs in every human being. We will be discussing this in class for  few moments each day as we also participate in the whole school activities. See the sheet below if you missed them. 

Encourage your child each day to try on the goal for that day! Talk about how to do it and the impact it will have on others. 

Picture Day TK-2

Picture Day is coming up! The information went home in daily folders this week. You can purchase photos online or send in the envelope. Typically we are one of the first slots of the day……so, if you are cleared and would love to stay after drop off, we’d love to have you help us out in the Multi Purpose Room that morning. In general the students wait in line with their name card to get their picture taken. Some volunteers help students get combed (they have separate combs for each student as needed) and check fine details. Other parents help with students are have already taken their picture and are waiting for the remainder of the class. Please let me know if you are interested! We’d love to have your help on that day!!

Volunteers Cleared – HOORAY!

We should be getting cleared volunteers any day! I will set up a calendar each month to let know the schedule. If you wish to add on or change days, please let me know in advance so I can prepare. We love having help and we love to see family faces in our day, we just need to prepare items for you to help or make sure we make other arrangements if you need to cancel. These first 6 weeks of school we may need additional help with students more than usual as they are settling into routines. If you are able and willing to cover some additional hours these first 6 weeks to help with students, please let me know. I’ll let you know as soon as I find out about clearance levels! We can’t wait! 

Student Reactions to Parent Volunteers! – Some students want to stay with mommy/daddy the whole time they are there, some students ignore their parent while they are there, some students have a hard time saying goodbye when the volunteer time ends and others are completely comfortable with it. In general most kids love it regardless of how they show it! If you think your child might have a hard time with you being there, just remember to discuss it with them before hand how you will be coming and that you are there to help all the kids, but you are helping in this class at this time because they are your child and you love them! Remind them about when it is time to leave, you will hug goodbye but not to worry as you will see them so soon they won’t even realize. 

Book Bags

This week you received your child’s book bag at home! How has it been going??? I hope your child has been enjoying the books! They may be doing even better than you expected just with having the first few weeks of school down and having the 10 new sight words under their belt! Please make sure to read the papers in the bag and the log. 

  • Too easy? – We often hear the phrase, “this was too easy for my child,” or “they blew right through them without any help,” or “they had the words memorized after the first read.” Though it may seem to you that that means the book is too easy, know that this is all part of the reading process. Reading fluency, memorizing the pattern, reader confidence, repeating the same read and most of all understanding the story or What the book is all about? are extremely valuable parts of reading. Try not to worry if this is the case. Try to read the books for 3, 4 or 5 days and then return the books! Our amazing folder volunteer has been kind enough to change out the books as they return. 
  • Need copies? – Road to Reading Logs were sent home with the first set of books. Every time you complete 10 reads, log them in and return the log a new log should come back that day in your folder. If for some reason you don’t get a new log, just stop in and we can hand you an extra log. 
  • Types of Reading – You can log in books you read to your child, books your child reads to you, reading from the Book Bag, Reading from RAZKids, etc. all on your log. All of these types of reading have great value. 
  • “What is this book all about?”  – Comprehension or Reading for Meaning is the most important factor in our reading….even more than getting the words “right.” Please make sure in any type of read you are asking what the book is about. If it is a picture book you are reading to your student, you can stop throughout the book to ask What it’s about?, What is happening?, Opinion – “What do you think about that?”, “What would you do if that was you?” This is powerful foundation for Independent Critical Thinking in literacy! Thank you for partnering in this work! 
  • Comments or Questions? – If you have any comments or questions about your child’s reading, feel free to mark it on the log and I will respond back to your comments or questions.
  • Prize Box – As a little extra motivation, when students complete a log, their car will move on the Road to Reading. After 5 or 6 logs, their car will make it to the library and they will get to the prize box. (Our Road to Reading in our classroom is almost finished. I will show a picture in facebook once its complete!)

Box Tops

You all received an email from our awesome Room Parents regarding Box Tops. This year is a little different due to the electronic/app ability in Box Tops. For me, it will actually make the task easier, but it will take a new habit to remember. Download the app (follow instructions in the email) and try a new habit such as scanning your receipt before you leave the store or once you get in the car. This will help you get all points possible to help our school and possibly even win the Box Top contest at our school!!

Sight Words

Keep working on those sight words. The end of the month is near and a new set of Orange words will come in October. If your child knows them well, I have one little friend who is practicing writing them at home! This is a great goal to add if your child is ready. Trying looking at the word, then facing it down and seeing if they can write the word. This requires them to picture it in their mind and build automaticity even it it’s just for 1-3 words. 

Letter of the Week – Ss

This week we learned the letter Ss. Letter Ss books went home yesterday. Your child can finish them with you at home. See our Ss chart below! 

Red Week

Each week we celebrate a new color and talk a little about the word RED also. On Thursdays, the TK/Kinder wear our week’s color to celebrate! *NOTE: This week, due to Say Hello Week, we will be wearing our color on Wednesday instead.

TK Days: Sept. 9 – 13

Math – Sorting

This week we continued out sorting experiences. We started to use a new manipulative to practice. Using the Attrilinks, students continued to practice sorting by color, shape, and number of sides. This upcoming week we will introduce sorting by size. 

Home Practice (optional): Get a cup of beads, or legos and have your child try sorting by size and name how they sorted the items. Then mix them up again and have them sort by color and name how they sorted the items. If your child is up to it, ask them if they can come up with an additional way to sort. Applaud your child’s efforts and mistakes! 

Name Practice

I apologize for not explaining this ahead of time. Name practice sheets have gone home 1-2 times. I will send these home a few more times. These are not homework nor are they due back, but just an additional way to properly write their name and form their letters and proper casing. If your child wants to send these back they may, but it is not necessary. Spend time working with your child on their grip, where they begin their stroke, etc. Use the letter direction page on the back to check proper formation. These are important habits they will use in their years of writing ahead!

Interactive Writing

Another way we practice formation is Interactive Writing. This is a time where we are all practicing the same writing together at the same time.

We have started using whiteboards this week for interactive writing. The kids have done awesome! We have started by writing our first name as a warm up. I have put a card in each bag with their name correctly printed. We then work on letter formation. We write a message together using our letter practice. You can see an example of this on our No Place for Heart message with our patriotic heart art. Below there is also a picture of the students all ready for interactive writing. 

Read to Self Stamina

We have continued to practice working on Read to Self. We are building our STAMINA. We began reading for 2 minutes and are successfully up to 2.5 minutes while still using our reading goals! These kids are awesome! 

RAZKids

Friday you received a log-in paper regarding an online reading program/subscription. We are attempting to log in and try this out on Monday, but you have access now to give this a try. Many kids enjoy reading on line and having the variety of books. Within this reading program there are comprehension checks in higher levels, and point incentives to motivate the kids to read more. I receive an email each week with a summary of each student and how often they logged in and how long they read for. Try this out this weekend and see how your child responds to it. They get to hear each book first and then try reading the book right after. 

Computer Log-In

This week we had our first time logging in at the computer lab. We will get there, but one of the biggest supports to your child is practicing their log in at home. This allows them 1-on-1 support in learning their log in. We will continue to practice in the lab but are limited in our time and have a higher adult-to-child ratio in class. We are also practicing in class with a paper keyboard (like the one sent home) to give additional practice. Thank you in advance for your time and practice at home. Keep on trying! 

Zones of regulation

This week we spent some time in class learning about the Zones of Regulation. This is a language we will use in class to help understand our own feelings and be empathetic towards the feelings of others and our impact on them. In our discussion we explained what each color means in terms of feelings and how our words or actions can escalate or de-escalate other person into a different color zone. Check out some of the posters we used in class during our discussion and/or google “Zones of Regulation” to learn more. 

Letter of the Week – Bb

Each week we will be focusing on a different letter. You will notice the letters do not go in order, which is why we are starting with the letter Bb. We will practice saying the letter out loud, saying the sound out loud (which is connected to bouncing a ball from our alphabet song) and writing the letter in the air. Throughout the week we come up with a list of words that begin with that sound/letter which the students can refer back to over the year.

Closer to the end of each week, we complete an alphabet book. You likely saw this come home this week. Notice the 3 lines towards the top right of the book. These lines signify the 3 times that your student read the book. There is also an activity page towards the back and a letter formation page for them to practice. If your child did not complete this they can work on it at home. I would also encourage them to read these at home. These could also be logged in on their Reading Logs each week. We are working on “using your reading finger” when they read so they practice 1:1 reading (one touch per one word read). The students have all improved in this area as well! You will love watching the progression of reading happen over these first few months! Its magical to watch!!!

 

Story Arc

The picture below shows the Story Arc that we use as a Graphic Organizer in understanding the concept of stories. This visual helps us to understand how in stories there is a Normal, how things are when the story begins, then something happens (Exposition) to begin the climbing of the conflict. The conflict concept continues to get worse and worse until a climactic event occurs to begin the resolution. The resolution concept will bring balance to the conflict and in some stories you will see the “New Normal,” in which the author shows how things are now after going through the journey of conflict and resolution. The students have done awesome in beginning understand the way that stories work and learning new concepts about texts!

The teach you everything you need to know for the lessons as well as give you all the materials in the trainings and I am of course here to help if you need anything as well. 

My Room Parent from last year is heading up the Fine Artist program and is amazing! This is also something you can join in with other parents if you only wish to teach one lesson or if you prefer to only help at the lessons, but not teach them.

TK Days: Sept. 2 – 6

Math

Since school started 2 weeks ago, we’ve been in our first unit in Math (Sorting & Classifying). The students have been practicing and understanding the different ways to sort and the attributes. They have not only practiced these skills but working with a partner and teamwork. We have also had mini math challenges within this math period in which they had to work together with their partner to use all the pieces in bowl to create something. We have seen great improvement in their learning and their awareness of others. 

Read to Self

We started Read to Self last week! To keep the routine and momentum going we have read every day since. The video below was from our first time reading together. We co-created this chart to go set goals of how our Read to Self time works. Since this day we have created our Stamina chart which reminds us with “stamina” means and helps us to see our stamina progress in Read to Self! I’m super proud of each of these kiddos! They are doing so awesome! 

I’m also attaching the “How to Read” chart we made the first few days of school. This is a big anchor in our understanding of reading!

Computer Lab

We were able to visit the computer lab for the first time this week! The students met Ms. Martin, our Computer Lab Teacher as well as got a look at the room. Next week we will return to the computer lab and try logging in on the computers to try them out. We will continue to practice logging in over the next couple of months so that every student is able to independently do this! Its a huge celebration each time one of the students keeps on trying and is able to do this! 

Clever Log In

This can be challenging but I promise the students can do it! (even those who don’t recognize the numbers or their names). Please practice this at home. Go over it first on the paper keyboard many times to help with number identification and location. We’ll keep on trying and making mistakes with cheers! 

Home Reading

I’m hoping to get reading book bags out to students soon. Directions will come with home reading bags as well as a first reading log. Remember to read both ways….each are valuable.

  • parent reads……..to student

Each type of reading holds different values but are equally important. When reading to your child remember to discuss the book and ask opinion questions about the story and characters. This is a great foundation to understanding literature. 

In addition to home book bags, you will also receive a log in to a home reading program. This subscription allows your child to have access to online books at their level. 

*NOTE: The password given to your child will continue to be their same log in password each year in school. 

Sight Words

Many of the students already know many of their September Red Words! So awesome! Thank you for practicing with them and playing the My Pile Your Pile game with them! This will be a huge support as they begin learning to read!

3rd Grade Buddies

Many of you saw us with some “big kids” at Friday’s TK Dismissal! We had an exciting afternoon. We met with our 3rd grade buddies for the first time on Friday. We will meet with them every other Friday. Our activities will vary but in general the 3rd graders will interact with them, help them, and build a relationship with them over the course of this year! Super exciting! Ask your student about this experience! 

Lock Down Drill

We had a lock down drill this week. We spoke to the students about the purpose of a lockdown drill (the danger being outside the classroom) and how we need to stay in the room to stay safe. The students were so brave and able to stay quiet until the drill is over! I’m so amazed by these guys!

First Day Form

Thank you all who have filled out the Student/Family Information Form. If you have not filled this form out yet, please do so as soon as possible so we communicate with all families on multiple platforms (email, facebook, etc). We are waiting on a few more forms to come in. Thank you! 

First Day Photos

We took first day photos and we’ve been dying to share them with you!! These sweet little faces are a joy and what make my job so much fun! Seriously …..so cute!! Enjoy! 

Restrooms Before School

Please make sure your TK’er uses the restroom before school. This not only helps your child to come in ready to learn, but can prevent a chain reaction of other students needing to use the restroom just as we enter the room and start our day of learning! Thank you so much for your help on this!!

There are 2 restrooms located out on the Kindergarten Playground where we line up (one on each side of the building. 

Morning Procedures

Thank you so much for all those families who have not only remembered morning procedures, but have had your student exercise their independence and do it themselves! Just a reminder as we are still getting many folders left in backpacks in the morning. This can make it challenging to get paperwork returned and sent home to families each day. Please remind your TK’er to:

  • Students put their snack in the blue tubs
  • Students put their folders in the green tub (labeled “Folders”)
  • Students hang their backpacks up on a hook. Any hook is fine until we give numbers out to students to specify which hook. (remember we have hooks around the corner if they run out). 

Thank you so much for helping with this! 

First Fire Drill

Friday we had our first fire drill of the year! We typically have 1 drill a month. Sometimes we have a lockdown drill and other times we have a disaster drill, but most commonly are fire drills. Since it was our first drill and it began at the end of recess, we discussed what a drill is, why we have drills and our procedures in a drill. We also discussed the loud bell that goes off in order to get our attention and help move everyone out of the building into safety. 

I unfortunately didn’t get a picture of this drill but the students did outstanding in getting in line and walking to our safe space on the upper blacktop. 

Kinder Assessments

Many of you have asked if you would get results of the assessments I have given after school with each student. I should have clarified this at Back to School Night as there is an impression that some sort of score or grade will be given. These “assessments” are really more of a get-to-know your child time. We are meeting them 1:1 and seeing what they know and how they respond to questions. This helps us know the personality and starting ability range of this class as each year, the classes are different. Our goal as teachers is to cater our day to the needs of your child and this helps us understand their needs on all fronts. Thank you for bringing them in!

EBS Morning Run Club

In case you haven’t heard, our school has a morning run club! Of course this excites me as I’m a runner, but if you and your child are interested give it a try! Here are some benefits of this optional program:

  • You get great parking!
  • You get to school on time!
  • Your child gets to run and get daily exercise before they come to school! 
  • It’s  a fun place to meet new friends.
  • Your child can earn prizes and at the end of the year they can earn a certificate and even a medal depending how much they run!
  • It creates a sense of accomplishment and pride in each runner! 

Just a reminder, students must have a parent up at the run club field with them the whole time. This fun all begins on Tuesday, and is available every day of the week from 8:15am – 8:30am. Run club is on the field just above the upper playground.
