Veteran’s Day

This week we made this Red Poppy art to share a symbol used in the past to honor those living Veteran’s that were honoring our country and the people within! Take a look at the variety of poppies!

PS..this was a tear art project! We got to practice having some frustration, not giving up and trying our best even through a challenging task! Such a good experience!

Food Drive

The EBS Food Drive has officially started! You can bring any cans into the classroom or leave them at the front of the school! I encourage you to not only bring a can, but to have a discussion with your child about where the can is going and why it is needed. Keep your eyes peeled…..in the next week or so, we will be sending home a note for your family to participate in a giving project (hint: Mexico) that goes directly to families in need. It is a great conversation piece for your family and more importantly a huge help to families in need!

Character Education-GRATITUDE

This week, Nicole Meyer came in to teach our class about the character trait for the month of November. This month the focus is on gratitude. Nicole discussed the meaning of this trait and many examples. She read them a book called “The Gift of Nothing.” The students then wrote their own writing piece…”I am grateful for….” These pieces are hanging in our entry way wall now for viewing! Thank you Nicole!

Rubio’s Night 11/21

Mark your calendars…Visit Rubio’s on the day of 11/21 to support EBS. We get a portion of the proceeds and you get to enjoy a yummy meal. More information will be coming out in email blasts from the school!

Field Trip!!!

Our class had a great time on the field trip to the Apple Orchard! Mrs. Corcoran let the TK/K classes from EBS visit their farm this week. She saved the end of the apples for us to visit and eat. They were delicious! She spoke with our group about how these tasty apples develop along with the parts of the apple. We then got to pick our own bag of apples and then we got back on our bus for our drive back to our classroom! A special thanks to all of our cleared parents for coming along and helping the students for the discussion and during all the picking!

EBS School Book Fair

The EBS Book Fair is coming! This is a fun event that we have at our school each fall. Our class will visit together to either shop (you can send money with your child) or window shop (in which you can return at a later time with your child to purchase). The book fair will be open from Thursday, Nov. 14th – Friday 22nd. Our class will visit this week on:

  • Friday, November 14th from 9:00 am – 9:30 am. We welcome any parents to stay that morning and visit with us.

We will be inviting all grandparents in to spend a short time with our class in which we will do a short activity together with them. Grandparents may visit the book fair with their grandchild this day as well. Spread the word with any grandparents to come and join us!!

We will have a pink contest and 1 boy and 1 girl will be chosen for wearing the most pink! This is a small motivator to get into the pink spirit and to support 3 of our EBS teachers who will walk 60 miles next weekend in support of Breast Cancer! Go PINK!

206 Halloween Party!

This week we had our Halloween Party! What a blast! Thank you to every parent and our Room Parents who planned and organized this whole party! Fantastic fun for all the kids! They loved it all!

Bat Hats

This week we learned all about Bats! We made Bat Hats with our buddies last week and spent some time learning about these nocturnal animals.

Field Trip Information

This Thursday we will be going to the Apple Orchard. Students will be riding on a bus while parent chaperones drive by car to meet us there. The kids are so excited and can’t wait to ride the bus and pick apples.

A reminder will go home Wednesday to remind students to bring a snack in a disposable bag along with a plastic bag (labeled with their name) to bring their apples home in.

Students will hear Mrs. Corocan tell about about apples, their reproduction, and parts of the apple and apple tree. She will go into depth into the science behind it with visual supports. She will ask adults to kindly not use cell phones during the presentation. Only D cleared parents/teachers are able to take students to the restroom. You can also help with students picking apples from the tree. We will then load back in the bus and head back to EBS. Keep in mind, when we return from the Apple Orchard it will be close to Thursday dismissal and may be crowded. You may want to carpool as parents for this reason.

IN THIS POST:  Super Pledge….we’re aiming to get to 80%, Logging In Success!, November Volunteer Calendar, Fall Festival, Reading Group ….switchin’ it up!, Parent Teacher Conferences, Letter of  the Week Dd, Save the Dates, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Super Pledge….we’re aiming to get to 80%!!

We are closing in on the end of the Super Pledge. Not only does this help to improve and fund our school to provide the above and beyond school experience, but it also helps us to be part of the team! Most all of the classes have 80% -100% of their envelopes returned. You don’t have to donate, but by returning your envelope regardless of a donation, you are saying you are “in” to be part of our EBS team. Our AFP is a powerful team that makes this school so fabulous. Just this morning, a friend was saying, “Your school is awesome! They have so many extras there.” Its that “awesome” part that draws families here and makes us all want to call it our home school! Join the crowd on this one…return your envelope if you haven’t already and show how much you appreciate and love being a part of this team!

If by chance you need a new envelope, just stop by the school office and they have extras!

ALL ENVELOPES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY, NOV. 1ST…THIS FRIDAY!

Logging In Success!

Applaud your little sweetie pie! As the youngest members at our school, we have almost 100% of our students who are able to log in! How awesome is that!!! Seriously give them a high five! That is a high achievement that not any 4 or 5 year old can say they are able to do!!

Volunteer Calendar

Fall Festival

Our school Fall Festival was tonight! It was a fun night filled with many activities! I saw many of our little TK friends in their adorable costumes! If you weren’t able to make it out this year, make a point to stop by next year! There were new games and as always a lot of fun activities to do! Thank you for joining and we hope you enjoyed yourself!

Reading Groups…switchin’ it up!

This week we began our leveled reading groups! Amongst the TK and K classes we aim to provide every student with 4 days of leveled reading instruction. This means that they are receiving specialized lessons right at their instructional levels. The students also love this as we get to mix up with the Kindergarten classes and many of our students get to try out another teacher’s style! If your child hasn’t already told you about how they go to another teacher’s class, ask them to share the experience about it!

Parent Teacher Conferences

The Parent Teacher Conference  Sign Up Link was sent out this past week! I believe most all parents have signed up, but if you missed this, please check your email and make sure you sign up for a conference time! We will quickly go over your child’s progress and next steps to keep on improving!

It’s sooooo fun to see all the growth and progress in such a short time! Thank you for all your support at home and in class! I seriously know how blessed we are…there are so many hands and faces in daily to make this year as successful as ever! Thank you all! Not only do we feel loved, but appreciate every moment and effort you all team up to give to our class! #TKtribe

IN THIS POST:  Birthday Thanks!, We Got Boo’d, First Field Trip …SURPRISE!, Buddy Time…Math Tiles, Miss Ellen Assembly, Disaster Drill, Running Club Achievement,  Letter of  the Week Tt,, Save the Dates, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Birthday Thanks!

A sincere thanks to all the birthday love you shared with me this past Wednesday! I was floored by all the home made cards and my favorite treats! I was greeted by a delicious coffee, a delightful and flavorful lunch (that I didn’t have to pack in the morning) and a lovely kid-print gift with gift cards to a date with my husband!! Such a great day! I had continuous hugs all day and got to share my birthday with a 206 buddy! Thank you for caring so much for me!!

We Got Boo’d!!

We came in to class this Tuesday and found a bag at our door! We had been “Boo’d” by another class! The kids were so excited and we couldn’t believe what the treat was! Check out our picture!! We had some belly laughs with this treat!

First Field Trip….SURPRISE!!

I had no idea, but the kindergarten class decided to go to the Apple Farm this year! Since they are taking buses they were kind enough to extend an invite to our class since 2 classes can fit on one bus (which makes 6 classes in all if we are included). We will be taking the students in a bus to the farm and going with Mrs. Huynh’s class. Please return items as soon as possible. You will still be able to go even if you are not D cleared as we are taking a bus together and will be with the teacher the entire time. We hope you can make it and I apologize about the surprise notice….it was a last minute invite!!

Buddy Time …. Math Tiles!

During our buddy time this week, our 3rd grade buddies, taught our students how to do Math Tiles! This is a math (number sense foundation) activity. We will begin doing this with volunteers but were given introductory tutoring by our buddies since they did it in first grade and in kindergarten! It is so awesome to have these 1:1 helpers!!

Ms. Ellen Assembly!

This week we celebrated another special birthday…Ms. Ellen Browning Scripps had a birthday! Each year we celebrate her life and all that she was to the community. We had a few speakers give a speech about her and the choir sang a couple different birthday songs to her. There was a surprise appearance from the Wednesday Hip Hop class …it was a great way to celebrate a phenomenal lady!

I’m not sure if you know much about her, but her heart to give was seriously unreal! Check out some Ms. Ellen facts here!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Browning_Scripps

Disaster Drill

This was an eventful week as we also had our first Disaster Drill. I did not warn the students of this as I thought it might be more powerful to let it play out and then follow up with talk afterwards as they would be able to understand better. Different from a fire drill, Ms. Sloan gets on the intercom and announces that we are having a disaster drill in a very calm voice. She steps them through what they should be doing (getting under a table, holding on to a leg of a table and covering their eyes/face) as we pretend we are in current earthquake. She names the stopping of the pretend shaking in which I wait 2 minutes for the shaking to stop and then we all head up to the outside safe spot that we also go to for fire drills. The kids did a pretty good job considering and our talk after the drill was very powerful. We practiced the tuck and cover body positioning! I’m so proud of them and confident that they will know better during our next disaster drill what to do and the most important parts of our body to protect!

Running Club Achievement

One our dear students made it to 100 laps in the Before School Run Club! He is the first in our class to make this achievement! We are so proud of him and his efforts! Give a round of applause!!

Letter of the Week…Tt!

This week we practiced writing and remembering the capital letter, lower case letter and sound of “Tt.” These students have made such great improvements.

Parent Teacher Conference Week

Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up! This first set of conferences, I will meet with all parents to discuss your child’s progress and next steps for growth. Each conference is about 25 minutes with 30 minute time slots.

An on line link will be mailed out to each family for you to sign up for a time that works best for you. We ask that we meet with parent or parents only as it is a preference to discuss the growth and next steps without your child present.

I look forward to meeting with each of you! The link should be out by the end of October.

Family Fun Wall

Our Family Fun Wall is up on the wall! The kids are loving seeing their families in our room! If you haven’t sent in a photo yet, please feel free to send a 4×6 photo of your family!

Buddy Time!

We love our buddy time! We played Roll a pumpkin this week!

Reading at Home (logs)

Just a reminder that we are aiming to read consistently. Books will be exchanged after you return them or your child can read on RAZKids. Your child will move along the Road to Reading as they turn in their logs. They get a prize when they reach the library! Remember to log all reading:

  • Reading to your child (your books of choice)
  • Reading with your child
  • Your child reading to you! (each time they read the book, log it)

All are valued and an important part of reading!

Letter/Sound of the Week…Cc

This week we studied the letter and sound of C. This letter is a foundation in handwriting. Did you realized from a lower case “c” that all these other letters are formed.

Spookley, The Square Pumpkin

This week Caitlyn Tschernskowitsch prepared a story and craft for our students. IN THIS POST: Start with “Hello” Week, Picture Day TK-2, Volunteers Cleared,  D Clearance Now Available, Buddy Time, Read to Self, Scholastic News, Give A Cheer, Letter of  the Week Mm, STEAM, Save the Dates, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Start With “Hello” Week

What a fantastic week! All of the elementary schools in Scripps participated in Start With Hello Week. It was a great week of intention and awareness and students not only stepped outside of comfort zones, but were taking on intentional efforts to seek-out those who were alone, act kind to others, and be a model member of the EBS community! See some pictures from this week’s highlights!

Picture Day TK-2

Picture Day is Tuesday! If you wish to come on Tuesday, just stay with our class from drop off time. We will be taking our pictures first that day and will head over shortly after the first bell! Remember to say “cheese” and to practice those adorable smiles in the mirror!

Volunteers Cleared – HOORAY!

Many of our applications have been processed and we have volunteers starting Tuesday! If you are coming in to volunteer, please come into the room before school starts so I can go over what the volunteering time and requests will look like that day. Thank you in advance! I’ve been waiting and so excited for this day!!

D Clearance Now Available

If you plan to drive on one of our field trips, you can now pick up a “Category D” clearance applications. These were released this week. A new “D” application will need to be filled out each year, however the District fingerprinting lasts for a lifetime.

Buddy Time

This week we spent our buddy time on something very worthwhile….logging in at the Computer Lab! It was MAGIC…seriously!! We tried this strategy out and it was awesome! Each child had an older child helping to 1:1 coach and encourage them through this process! Many more of our students are now able to or on the brink of being able to log in! Super exciting! They also got modeled and could practice how to log out! Go 206!!

Read to Self

In Read to Self this week we finally reached 3 minutes. This isn’t any old 3 minutes, but rather 3 minutes of practicing the diligence of “Read to Self.” Check out this video out and applaud your little reader!!

Scholastic News

Friday the students came home with their first scholastic news magazine! We do these in class together and let them try out the activity on the back by themselves. Enjoy!

Give a Cheer

We just wanted to give a special shout out to Shinobu Watanabe (Anna’s Mom). This sweet lady has been doing our folders and book bag trading almost every day this year. It may not be noticed by all, but it a huge help. I only have one 12-15 minute break each day to go to the restroom and have a snack/water. This is normally when I would be scurrying to get the folders barely finished before the kids came in to pack up for the end of our day! Please give a big round of applause to her!

Lianna Lam (Jeremiah’s Mom) and Aklesh Jain (Anaya’s dad) are also helping with the morning unpacking and packing! We are super grateful for these folks! They model responsibility and consistency! Give a round of applause!!

Letter of the Week – Mm

This week we learned the letter Mm. Letter Mm books stayed in our book drawers this week and will come home soon. In the meantime we will be practicing them at school! Next week is the letter/sound Aa.

To also celebrate and practice the letter Mm this week, we read the book Go Away Big Green Monster. We made our own Big Green Monsters and practiced capital and lower case Mm’s (start every letter going down) and sound that it makes! We had a lot of run with this!!

STEAM

We have been learning about Living vs. NonLiving things in STEAM. We have discussed what makes a living and non living thing and this week we each built a living thing with our STEAM legos.

This Coming Week….YELLOW Week!

Each week we celebrate a new color and talk a little about the word RED also. On Thursdays, the TK/Kinder wear our week’s color to celebrate! *NOTE: This week, due to Say Hello Week, we will be wearing our color on Wednesday instead.

IN THIS POST: Start with “Hello” Week, Picture Day TK-2, Volunteers Cleared, Book Bags, Box Tops, Sight Words, Letter of the Week Ss, Red Week, Save the Dates, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Start with “Hello” Week

This week our school is being a part of something that could be life-changing for many students or even for one student. We are participating in “Start With Hello Week” as a part of the No Place for Hate Campaign. You may have seen some of the emails and may have skimmed the content, but it is something designed to remind us of inclusiveness. Though isolation and depression may not seem to happen often in younger grades like TK, the act and feeling of responsibility to include all members and value others (even those we may not agree with or those who are different than us) could start to make a real change in our world.

This week our school is making it a priority to focus on how we can not only be a part of this movement, but truly strengthen these types of character traits in our students. We want EBS to be a place where people feel welcome, invited and safe. Belonging is one of the core basic needs in every human being. We will be discussing this in class for  few moments each day as we also participate in the whole school activities. See the sheet below if you missed them.

Encourage your child each day to try on the goal for that day! Talk about how to do it and the impact it will have on others.

Picture Day TK-2

Picture Day is coming up! The information went home in daily folders this week. You can purchase photos online or send in the envelope. Typically we are one of the first slots of the day……so, if you are cleared and would love to stay after drop off, we’d love to have you help us out in the Multi Purpose Room that morning. In general the students wait in line with their name card to get their picture taken. Some volunteers help students get combed (they have separate combs for each student as needed) and check fine details. Other parents help with students are have already taken their picture and are waiting for the remainder of the class. Please let me know if you are interested! We’d love to have your help on that day!!

Volunteers Cleared – HOORAY!

We should be getting cleared volunteers any day! I will set up a calendar each month to let know the schedule. If you wish to add on or change days, please let me know in advance so I can prepare. We love having help and we love to see family faces in our day, we just need to prepare items for you to help or make sure we make other arrangements if you need to cancel. These first 6 weeks of school we may need additional help with students more than usual as they are settling into routines. If you are able and willing to cover some additional hours these first 6 weeks to help with students, please let me know. I’ll let you know as soon as I find out about clearance levels! We can’t wait!

Student Reactions to Parent Volunteers! – Some students want to stay with mommy/daddy the whole time they are there, some students ignore their parent while they are there, some students have a hard time saying goodbye when the volunteer time ends and others are completely comfortable with it. In general most kids love it regardless of how they show it! If you think your child might have a hard time with you being there, just remember to discuss it with them before hand how you will be coming and that you are there to help all the kids, but you are helping in this class at this time because they are your child and you love them! Remind them about when it is time to leave, you will hug goodbye but not to worry as you will see them so soon they won’t even realize.

Book Bags

This week you received your child’s book bag at home! How has it been going??? I hope your child has been enjoying the books! They may be doing even better than you expected just with having the first few weeks of school down and having the 10 new sight words under their belt! Please make sure to read the papers in the bag and the log.

  • Too easy? – We often hear the phrase, “this was too easy for my child,” or “they blew right through them without any help,” or “they had the words memorized after the first read.” Though it may seem to you that that means the book is too easy, know that this is all part of the reading process. Reading fluency, memorizing the pattern, reader confidence, repeating the same read and most of all understanding the story or What the book is all about? are extremely valuable parts of reading. Try not to worry if this is the case. Try to read the books for 3, 4 or 5 days and then return the books! Our amazing folder volunteer has been kind enough to change out the books as they return.
  • Need copies? – Road to Reading Logs were sent home with the first set of books. Every time you complete 10 reads, log them in and return the log a new log should come back that day in your folder. If for some reason you don’t get a new log, just stop in and we can hand you an extra log.
  • Types of Reading – You can log in books you read to your child, books your child reads to you, reading from the Book Bag, Reading from RAZKids, etc. all on your log. All of these types of reading have great value.
  • “What is this book all about?”  – Comprehension or Reading for Meaning is the most important factor in our reading….even more than getting the words “right.” Please make sure in any type of read you are asking what the book is about. If it is a picture book you are reading to your student, you can stop throughout the book to ask What it’s about?, What is happening?, Opinion – “What do you think about that?”, “What would you do if that was you?” This is powerful foundation for Independent Critical Thinking in literacy! Thank you for partnering in this work!
  • Comments or Questions? – If you have any comments or questions about your child’s reading, feel free to mark it on the log and I will respond back to your comments or questions.
  • Prize Box – As a little extra motivation, when students complete a log, their car will move on the Road to Reading. After 5 or 6 logs, their car will make it to the library and they will get to the prize box. (Our Road to Reading in our classroom is almost finished. I will show a picture in facebook once its complete!)

Box Tops

You all received an email from our awesome Room Parents regarding Box Tops. This year is a little different due to the electronic/app ability in Box Tops. For me, it will actually make the task easier, but it will take a new habit to remember. Download the app (follow instructions in the email) and try a new habit such as scanning your receipt before you leave the store or once you get in the car. This will help you get all points possible to help our school and possibly even win the Box Top contest at our school!!

Sight Words

Keep working on those sight words. The end of the month is near and a new set of Orange words will come in October. If your child knows them well, I have one little friend who is practicing writing them at home! This is a great goal to add if your child is ready. Trying looking at the word, then facing it down and seeing if they can write the word. This requires them to picture it in their mind and build automaticity even it it’s just for 1-3 words.

Letter of the Week – Ss

This week we learned the letter Ss. Letter Ss books went home yesterday. Your child can finish them with you at home. See our Ss chart below!

Red Week

Each week we celebrate a new color and talk a little about the word RED also. On Thursdays, the TK/Kinder wear our week’s color to celebrate! *NOTE: This week, due to Say Hello Week, we will be wearing our color on Wednesday instead.

IN THIS POST: Math – Sorting, Name Practice, Interactive Writing, Read to Self Stamina, RAZkids, Computer Log-In, Zones of Regulation, Letter of the Week – Bb, Story Arc,  Save the Dates, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Math – Sorting

This week we continued out sorting experiences. We started to use a new manipulative to practice. Using the Attrilinks, students continued to practice sorting by color, shape, and number of sides. This upcoming week we will introduce sorting by size.

Home Practice (optional): Get a cup of beads, or legos and have your child try sorting by size and name how they sorted the items. Then mix them up again and have them sort by color and name how they sorted the items. If your child is up to it, ask them if they can come up with an additional way to sort. Applaud your child’s efforts and mistakes!

Name Practice

I apologize for not explaining this ahead of time. Name practice sheets have gone home 1-2 times. I will send these home a few more times. These are not homework nor are they due back, but just an additional way to properly write their name and form their letters and proper casing. If your child wants to send these back they may, but it is not necessary. Spend time working with your child on their grip, where they begin their stroke, etc. Use the letter direction page on the back to check proper formation. These are important habits they will use in their years of writing ahead!

Interactive Writing

Another way we practice formation is Interactive Writing. This is a time where we are all practicing the same writing together at the same time.

We have started using whiteboards this week for interactive writing. The kids have done awesome! We have started by writing our first name as a warm up. I have put a card in each bag with their name correctly printed. We then work on letter formation. We write a message together using our letter practice. You can see an example of this on our No Place for Heart message with our patriotic heart art. Below there is also a picture of the students all ready for interactive writing.

Read to Self Stamina

We have continued to practice working on Read to Self. We are building our STAMINA. We began reading for 2 minutes and are successfully up to 2.5 minutes while still using our reading goals! These kids are awesome!

RAZKids

Friday you received a log-in paper regarding an online reading program/subscription. We are attempting to log in and try this out on Monday, but you have access now to give this a try. Many kids enjoy reading on line and having the variety of books. Within this reading program there are comprehension checks in higher levels, and point incentives to motivate the kids to read more. I receive an email each week with a summary of each student and how often they logged in and how long they read for. Try this out this weekend and see how your child responds to it. They get to hear each book first and then try reading the book right after.

Computer Log-In

This week we had our first time logging in at the computer lab. We will get there, but one of the biggest supports to your child is practicing their log in at home. This allows them 1-on-1 support in learning their log in. We will continue to practice in the lab but are limited in our time and have a higher adult-to-child ratio in class. We are also practicing in class with a paper keyboard (like the one sent home) to give additional practice. Thank you in advance for your time and practice at home. Keep on trying!

Zones of regulation

This week we spent some time in class learning about the Zones of Regulation. This is a language we will use in class to help understand our own feelings and be empathetic towards the feelings of others and our impact on them. In our discussion we explained what each color means in terms of feelings and how our words or actions can escalate or de-escalate other person into a different color zone. Check out some of the posters we used in class during our discussion and/or google “Zones of Regulation” to learn more.

Letter of the Week – Bb

Each week we will be focusing on a different letter. You will notice the letters do not go in order, which is why we are starting with the letter Bb. We will practice saying the letter out loud, saying the sound out loud (which is connected to bouncing a ball from our alphabet song) and writing the letter in the air. Throughout the week we come up with a list of words that begin with that sound/letter which the students can refer back to over the year.

Closer to the end of each week, we complete an alphabet book. You likely saw this come home this week. Notice the 3 lines towards the top right of the book. These lines signify the 3 times that your student read the book. There is also an activity page towards the back and a letter formation page for them to practice. If your child did not complete this they can work on it at home. I would also encourage them to read these at home. These could also be logged in on their Reading Logs each week. We are working on “using your reading finger” when they read so they practice 1:1 reading (one touch per one word read). The students have all improved in this area as well! You will love watching the progression of reading happen over these first few months! Its magical to watch!!!

Story Arc

The picture below shows the Story Arc that we use as a Graphic Organizer in understanding the concept of stories. This visual helps us to understand how in stories there is a Normal, how things are when the story begins, then something happens (Exposition) to begin the climbing of the conflict. The conflict concept continues to get worse and worse until a climactic event occurs to begin the resolution. The resolution concept will bring balance to the conflict and in some stories you will see the “New Normal,” in which the author shows how things are now after going through the journey of conflict and resolution. The students have done awesome in beginning understand the way that stories work and learning new concepts about texts!

Consider…

Check out these dates below. If you are still considering ways to be involved, the Fine Artists lessons and Character Education Lessons are a fun way to help. The teach you everything you need to know for the lessons as well as give you all the materials in the trainings and I am of course here to help if you need anything as well.

My Room Parent from last year is heading up the Fine Artist program and is amazing! This is also something you can join in with other parents if you only wish to teach one lesson or if you prefer to only help at the lessons, but not teach them.

IN THIS POST: Math, Read to Self, Computer Lab, Home Reading, Sight Words, 3rd Grade Buddies, Lock Down Drill, Save the Dates, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Math

Since school started 2 weeks ago, we’ve been in our first unit in Math (Sorting & Classifying). The students have been practicing and understanding the different ways to sort and the attributes. They have not only practiced these skills but working with a partner and teamwork. We have also had mini math challenges within this math period in which they had to work together with their partner to use all the pieces in bowl to create something. We have seen great improvement in their learning and their awareness of others.

Read to Self

We started Read to Self last week! To keep the routine and momentum going we have read every day since. The video below was from our first time reading together. We co-created this chart to go set goals of how our Read to Self time works. Since this day we have created our Stamina chart which reminds us with “stamina” means and helps us to see our stamina progress in Read to Self! I’m super proud of each of these kiddos! They are doing so awesome!

I’m also attaching the “How to Read” chart we made the first few days of school. This is a big anchor in our understanding of reading!

Read to Self Link

Computer Lab

We were able to visit the computer lab for the first time this week! The students met Ms. Martin, our Computer Lab Teacher as well as got a look at the room. Next week we will return to the computer lab and try logging in on the computers to try them out. We will continue to practice logging in over the next couple of months so that every student is able to independently do this! Its a huge celebration each time one of the students keeps on trying and is able to do this!

Clever Log In

This can be challenging but I promise the students can do it! (even those who don’t recognize the numbers or their names). Please practice this at home. Go over it first on the paper keyboard many times to help with number identification and location. We’ll keep on trying and making mistakes with cheers!

Home Reading

I’m hoping to get reading book bags out to students soon. Directions will come with home reading bags as well as a first reading log. Remember to read both ways….each are valuable.

  • student reads ……to parent
  • parent reads……..to student

Each type of reading holds different values but are equally important. When reading to your child remember to discuss the book and ask opinion questions about the story and characters. This is a great foundation to understanding literature.

In addition to home book bags, you will also receive a log in to a home reading program. This subscription allows your child to have access to online books at their level.

*NOTE: The password given to your child will continue to be their same log in password each year in school.

Sight Words

Many of the students already know many of their September Red Words! So awesome! Thank you for practicing with them and playing the My Pile Your Pile game with them! This will be a huge support as they begin learning to read!

3rd Grade Buddies

Many of you saw us with some “big kids” at Friday’s TK Dismissal! We had an exciting afternoon. We met with our 3rd grade buddies for the first time on Friday. We will meet with them every other Friday. Our activities will vary but in general the 3rd graders will interact with them, help them, and build a relationship with them over the course of this year! Super exciting! Ask your student about this experience!

Lock Down Drill

We had a lock down drill this week. We spoke to the students about the purpose of a lockdown drill (the danger being outside the classroom) and how we need to stay in the room to stay safe. The students were so brave and able to stay quiet until the drill is over! I’m so amazed by these guys!
