Corrected Volunteer Calendar

Great apologies!! I was informed (so gratefully) of some grand date errors in the volunteer calendar. I corrected the calendar ….please discard your old copy and take note of the new dates. Thank you in advance for your patience!

Dr. Seuss Week

This week is Dr. Seuss Week! We are showing our spirit by wearing a different item each day! Participate with us! In honor of his actual birthday (on Monday) we celebrate his birthday by having Spirit Week (see flyer below) and inviting families in for Family Reading! We hope you can all join us before beginning your day …which is also PJ Day (siblings are welcome)!

Spring Conferences

As I mentioned back in November, Spring Conferences are designed purposely to meet with certain students in the spring to follow up on specific academic/behavioral areas (that is why there are only 3 minimum days in the spring rather than 5 days in the fall). We will not being meeting with every family especially if students are meeting grade level standards. A bright pink paper will be going home by next week to let you know if I’m requesting a conference or not.

Thank you for your patience as we have been busy testing all the students 1:1 in academic areas. It’s been so exciting to see all the academic growth that has taken place in the past few months! Go Team TK!! Thank you for all your help and support at home! It takes a village…these kids are amazing!!

Jog-A-Thon

Hooray for the annual Jog-A-Thon! It’s coming soon and its a day of fun! This is a big fundraiser for our school, but is also one of the most memorable, school-spirited days we have over the year! As a class, we will meet all the K-2 classes out on the field on the day of the event. Parents typically come to cheer, run or support with aide (water & oranges). The kids get 45 min – 60 min to run as many laps (on the run club field) as they can. Each child will receive a free T-Shirt (TK gets their own color) that will be passed out and worn on the day of the event. This day is full of fun and I can almost promise your child will conk out at bedtime that night!

An envelope went home this week regarding registering and fundraising. Typically there are class competitions for which classes can get 100% registered. Check over the information, register and consider supporting through donating and/or coming out on the day of the event!

Fine Artists

This week our students had our Fine Artists lesson! Students were mimicking a Salvador Dali print (see below). They drew their dog and added accents (tongue, eyes, etc) with paper but then used sponge brushes to “dab” their brush in 2 colors to create fur-like marks. These came out awesome! Accents were drawn on after to put their mouths, and collars. Special thanks to our awesome parents (Nicole, Racquel, and Farid) who prepped, taught and cleaned up the lesson!

Writing – Poetry

Has your child told you they are a poet? We have started a new poetry unit! The kids are doing awesome! I’m so proud of their efforts and they are loving it!!

Write to Ms. Sloan’s Dog!

I’m not sure if you’ve met Penny the Dog! She has become somewhat famous in the past years here at EBS! You may send in letters to Penny to tell/ask her questions and she will write you back! This is a great writing motivator and creates an authentic writing purpose to motivate your student to write!

Class Pictures

Our class picture came this week and was sent home on Thursday if you had ordered one! Enjoy the sweet faces and memories!

Tired of Tying Shoes???

Not sure if you’ve seen these, but if you are tired of tying your kiddos shoes and velcro wasn’t available you have some choices.

  • Teach your child and have them practice how to tie shoes (youtube has some interesting ideas).
  • Buy elastic, no-tie laces. I’ve used these in my own running shoes every since my first triathalon and they are quite magical. If you’re interested check on-line or in a shoes store/department. There are a variety of colors and brands!

Character Education – Honesty

This week Nicole Meyer came in to speak with the class about Honesty. She gave some examples and had them play a little game to see if they could name “Honest” or “Dishonest” regarding certain scenarios. Next, she read them the book called, “Be Honest and Tell the Truth.” Finally she gave them each a heart reminding them to be honest and know that it is a valuable gift to keep as you build trust with others.

Running Club Accomplishments

This got his 200 Lap ribbon for Morning Running Club! Woot! Woot! Give a big round of applause for his perseverance!

Generosity Bags

This weekend you received the kick off bag/flyer regarding our March giving project for We Have Heart! These are not due for a month and as always are optional! Our goal is to get to 100 bags to give to those without homes. Consider packing a bag (or two) and consider a conversation or two at your dinner table about this need and how we can help. We hope to join with you all in this effort!

*Feel free to copy and share this effort with neighbors, families, and friends! This is one of my favorite giving projects of the year!

100 Coins

We are coming to the end of the month where our 100 coin project will be returned. If you haven’t returned your 100 coins yet, keep on collecting and hunting! Please return at the end of next week!

Celebration of the Arts

This fun evening is approaching soon! You and your family will enjoy this fun filled evening that takes place in a book store! There is a passport to mark to make sure you visit all the stations, EBS student art being showcased, the EBS choir performs and so much more! Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 5th for this night of fun!

Buddy Time Activity

Each week with our buddies we participate in different activities ranging from Math, to art, to a unique game. This past week our 3rd grade friends helped us experience using SeeSaw for the first time. The students logged into our class profile and were able to explore by recording a video, drawing, etc. We will be using SeeSaw again in the future for the kids to experience different activities as well as record a video of their thinking, Super fun!

Oral Health Assessment

We still have a handful of students out who have not returned their Oral Health Assessment from registration. There is a free clinic coming up soon. Please consider going to get this requirement fulfilled. Information Sheets and flyers will be in folders on Monday if you haven’t returned yours yet. Thank you!

Valentine’s Celebration in 206

What a day we had! Special thanks to our Room Parents for all the work, planning and prepping that went into making this day so fun and organized! The students were split into 2 groups. One group decorated Valentine bags and the other group played an amazing counting game with dice and pom poms. Then each group switched. Finally we ended with a snack and delivered our valentine’s! So much fun!

Thank You

During our celebration I was presented a “Congratulatory Gift” for being Teacher of the Year! So sweet and I got a big group hug! So sweet! I’m seriously the luckiest teacher and sooooo grateful! Thank you!

100 Coins to Help Hunger

Don’t forget about your 100 coins for hunger! Two weeks left to count and collect 100 coins! Discuss how this will help others and how fortunate we are to not ever have to worry about having food. How can we give back?

“How To” Writing

This past week we took our “How To” writing assessment. The students have loved this unit and were super engaged! We are sad to leave this unit but excited for new units ahead! You will be receiving a clipped pack of your child’s “How To” writing from their folder. Take some time to read through these and praise your child’s efforts and mistakes!

Scholastic News

This week we read a scholastic news about ways to show love to people! This was a perfect joining with our conversations and the writing we have hung on our back wall! The ideas are lovely as these kiddos are learning so many ways that impact others positively with love even down to the smallest but valuable ideas such as – waiting! On the back of this article, it shows an envelope and reminds us that sending a card is a way to send love.

  • CHALLENGE: Have your child a card to someone in the next week. Not for Valentine’s but simply to say I’m thinking about you and your are special. (make sure to include the writing translation as needed.

Running Club Accomplishments

This sweet boy got his 400 lap ribbon this week! He has conquered 400 laps at Morning Run Club! Super proud of him as are his classmates! He got cheers, compliments and pats on the back all from his peers that morning!

Surprise Visit

Just before the 4-day Weekend started there was a surprise visit! Oh my goodness! Simply adorable and complete joy! You may see her around in the upcoming weeks!

TK Days – Feb. 3 – Feb. 7

IN THIS POST:  Valentine’s Day, 100 Days in TK, Lock Down, We Have Heart, Kindness Continues On, Last Call for Scholastic Book Orders, STEAM – Meteorologist Visit,  Save these Dates, The Week Ahead

Valentine’s Day

Just a reminder that this week we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Thursday, February 13th! Don’t forget to send valentines for 27 students so you don’t leave anyone out. Make sure to leave off the “To:” portion on your valentines and only have your child fill in their name on the “From:” portion on the label. NO FOOD is allowed or will be passed out. Thank you for understanding and helping us to follow district and school procedures.

Please send valentine’s by Wednesday, February 12th this week!

100 Days in TK

This week was a fun one! We hit our 100 Day milestone and celebrated for a whole day! These little 100 year olds ….ugh so darn cute! #brokethecutenessmeter

Thank you for all your help at home to prepare the fashion show aprons AND prep the writing AND our favorite to dress them up for the day! We had a blast! Special thanks to our parent volunteers that made the fashion show go off without a hitch and captured it all on film (digital film of course! 😉

Lock Down

This past week we had a surprise Lock Down Drill! The unexpectedness of the event was great practice for the students! They had no idea what was going on or what to do! Our class was eating snack at the lunch arbor when we had to whisk the kids away along with any other people to the nearest room and lock ourselves in. This happen to be Mr. Waczek’s room. He welcomed us in while we we huddled quietly in the corners of the room with the blinds drawn and lights off. They did a fantastic job!

We had to work on remembering in a lock down the “safe place” is inside (inside the nearest room) and that we leave all items behind (as we do in all drills) as the people are most important. I encourage to continue a further discussion (with questions about your how your child remembers it, how they felt and what they understood). These are great communication discussions for families to have and to reassure them they are safe and all of our drills are important.

When we returned to the room we reviewed the procedure for the 3 different types of drills.

  • FIRE DRILL – Broken bell which signals to leave the building immediately and go to our “safe place.”
  • DISASTER/EARTHQUAKE DRILL – Signaled by shaking in which students are to climb under the desks with heads/faces hidden by one arm while the other holds onto the tad
  • LOCKDOWN DRILL – Signaled by loud long bell and/or a voice telling us we are in a “lock down drill” in which we are to lock all doors, pull blinds, turn off lights and wait with the class quietly out of sight.

We Have Heart

As we ramp up our We Have Heart projects for this part of the year, we will be trying to collect 100 coins to donate to the San Diego Food Bank. These are being collected over the month of February and are due at the end of the month if you plan to participate.

In March, one of the most popular giving events of We Have Heart will take place! Keep your eyes peeled as flyers will go home at the end of February.

Kindness Continues On!!!

This week we have continued with Kindness as we try to hold it in focus for every day interactions not just on Kindness week!

Last Call for Scholastic Book Order

Order by Scholastic Book Order is going in this weekend. Please submit all book orders by Sunday Night, 2/9/20 at 8 pm.

STEAM – Meteorologist Visit

This week as part of a special lottery opportunity, we will have Jody Kodesh, NBC news’ meteorologist out to EBS. She will be visiting our school to share and discuss our last STEAM unit on Weather. We are looking forward to it!!
