THANK YOU! Happy Holidays!

A special thanks for all the love! Thank you for the beautiful class gift and adorable poster! So beautiful! Thank you for gift to one of my favorite restaurants! I appreciate all your kind words and trust as you let me work with your children each day! They are raw joy!

Room 206 Winter Celebration!

What a day we had on Friday! The kids were full of excitement with it being the last day and knowing there was a party to finish our day! Thank you to everyone came out and our awesome Room Mom, Dani Powell for planning such a fun day! We had a pre-party snack and story telling with popcorn, oranges, and juice boxes. After the snack, students broke into 3 groups and rotated through 3 different stations consisting of: Roll-A-Reindeer, Snowman Bowling/Stacking, and making a snow globe craft! Students had a great time and loved all the games and crafts! Thank you everyone for coming out and helping the students have such an amazing day!

Pajama Day!

Friday’s excitement was increased by experiencing their first pajama day! There were many smiles to come in  a fun pair of PJ’s!! Check out these adorable and cuddly kiddos!

Zones of Regulation

We have been discussing a new way to be aware of our own emotions and how to handle some of our emotions to make good choices and to be sensitive to the feelings of others. We have had some beginning conversations simply to understand each color and to discuss what we can do when we are in a yellow zone to slowly come back to green. Take a look at the pictures to understand more clearly. When in yellow zone, we have practiced:

  • Blowing candles out (blowing on each finger of one hand to calm down)
  • Taking deep, slow breaths
  • Walking away or ignoring the words or actions that upset you

These are a couple ways we have discussed to help us to be more aware of yellow zone and to move us back down to green zone. In an ideal world, we aim to stay far from red zone, where we are likely to make choices that can hurt others or ourselves.

Character Education – RESPECT

This Friday, Emily Forgeron came in to speak to the class about Respect! She came in to teach the students about Respect. She gave each child a small flag with the word “respect” written on it. She proceeded to read a couple short stories where respect and disrespect were shown. She asked the kids to raise their flag every time they heard an example of respect being shown. The students did a great job of listening and understanding examples of respect! Thank you Emily!

Marble Party Recess

This week, the 206 Team filled the marble jar and earned a class “marble party.” For marble parties, we have a list of choices that the class can choose from. Each student voted on the option they would like best to choose for a party. The “extra recess” option was chosen by the class! We celebrated this week and have started to fill the jar again. The jar is already 1/4 full! So proud of these guys for their effort and team work!

Sight Words

First off…apologies for last month’s confusion of light green words. The direction sheet had different words than the words on the cards. We realized their was a mix up in copying. To make it easiest, we are keeping the words printed on light green as December words. Dark green words will go home on Monday, January 7th. Thank you for understanding.

Don’t forget to play the sight word activities over the break with the first 40 Rainbow words!

RAZkids Robots

Have you been reading from RAZkids lately?? If you forgot about this access, take some time to have your child read over the break! The Robot Rewards have been turned on by our Computer Lab reacher. This means that as your child listen, reads and answers comprehension questions they can earn points (and use previously earned points) to build a Robot! Its unique fun that motivates the kids to read more! Give it a try!

IN THIS POST: Winter Party – Dec. 21st, Pajama Day Reminder, Character Education – 5th Grade, Holiday Learning, Absent Next Week?, Return Library Books, Mother-Son Bowling, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Winter Party – Dec. 21st

Our Winter Party is this Friday, December 21st. This is our last day before Winter Break and is also a minimum day for all students. We plan to have our party from 11:00 am – 12:00pm. The students will then go to snack and recess and finish our day! If you would like to join us, and are cleared, please let Dani Powell know….we’d love to have you!

Pajama Day Reminder

Friday, December 21st is Pajama Day! Check the Weather and make sure to dress in weather appropriate PJ’s. Remember we are not able to wear slippers or footsie pajamas. Layer with a jacket if needed and most importantly…HAVE FUN! Teachers wear their PJ’s too!

Character Education – 5th grade

This week our 5th grade Character Education Teachers came in and taught us about Respect. They gave a short demonstration to explain how respect work. Using some home ingredients they explained that the pepper they poured represented the people. The soap they put in were to model people who are being disrespectful. The pepper moved away from the soap, just as people move away from those who are being disrespectful. When sugar was add (representing respectful people) the pepper drew close to the sugar. This was an engaging representation to explain others reactions to us when we are respectful or disrespectful. We learned that “Respect is treating people kindly even if they are different from us!”

Holiday Learning

Back in November, we learned about Diwali. This week, we will take some time to learn a little about Hanukkah and Christmas. We will read or listen to a story and make a small craft to learn how others celebrate these holidays and what they believe.

Absent Next Week?

I know it is close to a 2-week winter break and many of us have plans to leave town. If you plan on missing any days next week, leaving early, etc, please let us know as we have different activities planned each day and some items to send home and want to make sure we don’t miss anyone. Thank you and hope you have a wonderful winter break with your family!

Return Library Books

We will not be visiting the library until we come back from break. I would strongly encourage you to return you library book sometime this week before we go on vacation! This will keep books from getting lost and to keep students from forgetting their book. Our next visit will be: Wednesday, January 16th, 2019!

Mother Son Bowling

Our annual Mother Son Bowling event is coming up! This will be my first time going as my son is new at EBS this year! I’ve heard its great fun and is a special way to have some quality time with your little man! If mother’s aren’t able to attend with your son, another special guest may escort your son. Hope to see you all there!

Not a son??? Not to worry! Early February is usually the time that EBS has their annual Father/Daughter Dance! Your turn is coming up soon!

Meals for Mexico

WOW!! Friday afternoon at the end count, we ended up with 77 meal bags! That’s amazing! Saturday morning, we left to drive down to Mexico! We decorated cookies, made a craft and they each opened presents. The beans/rice were given to each family as a take home meal for the adults. Thank you for your generosity!

Problem of the Day

This past Friday, the class finished their Problem of the Day book. Please take time to look through their booklet and see their work, struggles, and improvements. This will give you and idea of how the stories vary. We will start a new book this week.

Sight Word Correction

Apologies! I realized that an incorrect list went home for the “December Sight Words.” Since we love mistakes in Room 206, we ask that you continue to study those words on the light green cards, even though the words listed on the direction sheet are incorrect. In January, the dark green words will go home. Thank you in advance for understanding.

This past week, Dani Powell came in to read the students a story and create a new craft for our outdoor walls! They are adorable! Stop by and take a moment to check out your child’s winter penguin!

Stop by and visit our Snowman Directed Drawing in the hallway! They are adorable and all unique in their own way….the best!

Meals for Mexico

This week you received an orange flyer with a quart-sized ziploc bag attached. This is a time when we give to others and this is a simple and fun way to get your family and friends involved in giving a meal to a whole family! Unless we have any border issues, the plan is that I will be going down to Mexico next Saturday with my kids and some other families. We bring gifts, cookies to decorate and for the parents, I bring meals. The parents are so excited to get a gift of their own. All that is needed is:

  • Decorate the bag with permanent marker (this is an optional personalization)
  • Fill the bag with rice, beans, legumes, or pasta (rice and beans are a favorite)
  • Seal the bag and return

If you are willing to make more bags please do so! This is not only a way to give a meal to a whole family, but a great conversation to have about those who don’t always have food even if they are hungry. This is a luxury we have ….whenever we are hungry we can open a cupboard or refrigerator and there is something we can eat. Thank you in advance for sharing this with your child and giving to others!

Pajama Day

Who doesn’t love staying in their PJ’s ALL DAY??? Friday, December 21st, is our last day before Winter Break. It is also a half day for the entire school. In addition, EBS has a Pajama Day tradition on this last day….all students and staff will be in their PJ’s this day. Invite your child to join in the fun. If your child is uncomfortable or nervous about this, they of course don’t have to wear their PJ’s. I have also learned, if your little one seems nervous about unique, out-of-routine events like these, begin to talk about it early, and plant the idea and discussion ahead of time. For those of us that love some structure and routine (myself included) love a little time to get used to an idea that it out of the norm. Make a fun experience! If you happen to have Penguin PJ’s …. you can add in your school spirit on this day.

A couple final reminders for this fun day!

  • No slippers
  • No spaghetti straps
  • Shorts or pants under night gowns
  • Check the weather if your child needs a jacket for cold or short sleeve PJ’s for heat.

Holiday Shop

This a a new event for EBS this year! Our school has their own holiday shop for your child to buy gifts for others. Its a great way to continue the discussion about giving to others as it can be hard to not want for ourselves when you are 5 and all these fun items come around. Generosity and thinking of others a concept we work on a lot at school and at my own home.

We will be going as a class on Wednesday at 10:00 am. I have not been able to visit myself yet, but I hear their are gifts ranging from .25 – $15ish dollars. This might be a great time to let your child choose a gift for mom and dad or a sibling. Talk about it ahead of time. Make them aware of the amount you sent and encourage them to think through the eyes of the person they are shopping for…”What would they like?, How can you surprise them?.” This ended up being a great way for my own kids to shop for each other and work on keeping a secret about their gift.

A flyer was sent home before Thanksgiving break with an envelope attached. If you lost yours, there are more in the office, or you could make an envelope of your own. Just include on the envelope:

  • Your child’s name
  • Who they are supposed to shop for
  • How much money is included in the envelope

If you would like to join us, we will be going at 10:00am on Wednesday, 12/5 and we would love to have you as a “personal shopper” for our TK friends!

STEAM has Started!

This week we started our first STEAM lessons! They went fantastic! The students were so engaged and not just for the legos! The topic of this STEAM unit is Living and Non-Living Things. We used our “Wondering Journal” to write down some of our thinking, questions, and noticings. This week we discussed the difference between living and non living things along with with what living things need. This is a big concept that we are still continuing to work on. We learned that Plants, Animals and People are living things and they all need things that are the same (water, food, air, sun) and they each need things that are different (different homes, companionship for people, etc).

Of course the highlight was bringing out the “lego tools.” We used our tools to build a non-living things, and living things! Check out a couple of “living thing” examples. Can you guess which is the red daisy (by Matthew), hippopotamus (by Mason), elephant (by Ben), and tree (by Logan)???

We got back on RAZkids in the computer lab this past week. The students did great and enjoyed the listening and reading to books. Once you get past the beginning levels, the books will ask your child comprehension questions. You can even record your child reading a book. Take some time this week to mix up your child’s reading. Log on and take advantage of our RAZkids subscriptions. The students enjoyed it and its a way to track their progress. You can also add these books onto their reading log! I also get a weekly summary of all the students who logged on and read online each week.

If you forgot how to log on: (Encourage your child to do these steps with your help)

  • Go to the EBS webpage.
  • Click “students” > “Computer Lab” > “EBS Subscription Sites”
  • Scroll down to RAZ kids (with the parrot picture.
  • Find our class (class name is “ebs206”)
  • Find your child’s name, click the watermelon and read away!!!

Fine Artists

This past week Chrissy McComish (James’ mom) came in to teach our class about a new artist. The art technique used lines and shapes to make a cat. The students then filled in different parts of the cat shapes with patterns and designs. They did awesome! My favorite part about these lessons is that they encourage each child to make the art their own, unique from their peers! This is art! Check out our time at Fine Artists! Thank you Chrissy and our other mom helpers! This is a great gift to our students.

Character Education – 5th Grade

This past Monday our 5th grade teachers came in to share the Character Education lesson about Gratitude. They shared some examples with the students, read them a story and then had the students write down a gratitude. We love our 5th grade teachers and look forward to their lessons!
