Valentine’s Day Party

Today we enjoyed Valentines Day with many special activities planned by Dani Powell and Emily Forgeron (Thank you!). The students enjoyed a rotation of activities (Bingo, I-LOVE-YOU books, and Cupid’s Arrows) followed by decorating a bag and delivering their special Valentines to their friends!

These little TK’s were so excited and enjoyed giving out their special valentines! Thank you for all the love they shower, not just today, but every day! One of the best parts of my job is joy and love these little kiddos give each day! Seeing life through their eyes is so bright! May each of you have a Happy Valentine’s Day and wonderful Presidents Holiday with your family!

100 Coins

This month we are collecting 100 coins as a grade level! We have multi purposes in this activity! This is a way for students to be generous to others! These coins will be delivered to San Diego Food Bank! This is also an opportunity to practice counting as they collect and earn coins. They can practice counting to 100 by 10’s or 1’s. In addition this can be a chance to practice working on a goal at home (cleaning your room, dressing by yourself, doing your homework, etc) to earn coins. We’ve had some bags already turned in….GREAT JOB!! This coin collection is a Kindergarten Community effort and is completely optional. We are collecting through the whole month of February. Please turn all coins in by Thursday, February 28th. Thank you!

Assessments and Progress

During this month we are doing many assessments with each child to check their progress. The students have made much academic growth in each area of learning! I’m so proud of their progress as well of their effort! This year is such a year of learning and growth as we get a strong base of academics but are also equally working on many social goals. Learning how to work through struggle, friendship issues, how to request help or say an opinion in a kind way, following directions, etc. These are just some of the areas we focus on in this TK year!

Spring Parent Teacher Conferences

As many of you remember from our Fall Conferences, our Spring Time Conferences are only for 3 days as we only meet with some families that we request to check in regarding behavior and/or academic progress. I will be in contact with families that I am requesting to conference with. Thank you for your patience and support!

Book Bag Updates

Many students have moved reading levels, so you may be seeing a new level or a mix of two levels in their book bags in the next week or two as we change over. I typically send home their “Instructional Level” at home knowing you will be reading with them at home and will be able to support them. I put their independent level in their chair bags at their desk, as they will reading those independently. Just a few reminders regarding home reading support:

  • Rather than using the phrase, “sound it out,” remind them to look at the picture and the first sound and then think what would make sense. (Sounding out is a strategy we only use in writing unlike the reading terms we may have heard when we were in elementary school).
  • If the book is so challenging it is causing frustration, stop and read the book to your child or with your child the first time and the discuss the meaning. Then have your child go back and read it by themselves with support. The second time around is easier.
  • If the book is too easy, it will do no harm and focuses more on improving “Fluency” rather than learning to read new words. It is a helpful and necessary skills.
  • Log in books in their reading log and return in your child’s folder. Please feel free to ask any questions or support that you may have regarding your child’s reading.

Macarena Mrs. Sloan

How awesome is our Principal, that on a crazy rainy half day, she has kids come up on stage to dance the macarena and joins in with them! Love her! Had to capture this on my cam!

Chinese New Year

This week we celebrated Chinese New Year! Chinese New Year officially started on Tuesday, but we were lucky enough to have Panda Express come and visit us on Thursday. We heard all about a legend that started the traditions and many beliefs behind Chinese New Year! We also watched a video that explained a lot of the traditions as well. It was an exciting day and each student brought home a “Free Meal” card from Panda Express along with a book mark that would allow a whole other visit and free meal if filled out! Thank You Panda Express for your generosity and for all you taught us about the lunar new year!

100 Days in TK

We had a wonderful day celebrating 100 Days in TK! Thank you to all the parents who helped in our Fashion Show! The kids each took turns walking the runway in their aprons. There were so many creative ideas! Thank you for helping your child and making this activity so fun and so special!!

The rest of the day we celebrated 100 by doing many other activities! We did 100 exercises, we counted to 100 with popcorn and then had it for a snack! We also made 100 hats and listened to a 100 Days of School story! They had a blast! (Photo credits: Kranthi Vananma)

5th Grade Character Ed. – Forgiveness

These ladies came in and engaged these TK’s beautifully! They created a puppet show to show an example of forgiveness and how to handle situations when you have been hurt by someone else. They show great leadership in how they lead these students and help them to understand challenging character traits such as forgiveness!

100th Day

Our 100th day is almost here! We are all so excited! You should have received a reminder of all that is going on and due!

  • APRONS: We have already received some aprons and they are lovely! Don’t forget to send in the half sheet that describes their apron of 100 items.
  • 100 Year Old Writing: A rubric also went home to see how we will grade the students on their 100 year old writing. This is just to let you see an example and notice it is listening/speaking grade.
  • Dress Up: On the actual 100th day we will be dressing like we are 100 years old! So fun! Look for some ideas this weekend! This day is super adorable!

Box Tops – Feb. 1 – Feb. 15th

We have entered Box Top Collection Time. If you have any Box Tops you have found or have been saving, please package them individually in a ziploc baggie with your child’s name, classroom and grade. Thank you! This greatly helps our school and there are some prizes that go out for collecting. Feel free to ask family, friends and neighbors to save for you!

Computer Lab

The students have made much progress in Computer Lab. They can almost all log in by themselves. They are making great progress in ST Math, and RAZkids. Many students are also doing RAZkids at home and logging this in their Reading Log. Don’t forget on RAZkids they build up points which them allows them build a robot through the RAZkids website. They love this! Keep up the great work!

Canned Food Drive

If you haven’t brought a can of food in yet, send one this week. We are collecting cans to help the workers that were furloughed as the Food Banks were running low.

Father Daughter Dance

Next Friday is the Father Daughter Dance! Hoping you all signed up! This is a special treat for the girls at EBS. Not only do they get a Daddy Date, but they also typically have stations for nail painting, choosing a piece of jewelry and dancing of course! They love to socialize with all their friends and get some dancing in with daddy and their besties!

Heart Art

Our lovely room mom found an adorable and fun art for the students to do. She started off the art with a Valentine story and then had the kids dig in the fun! Each student was able to roll paint-covered marbles around inside  a container on their piece of paper. There were different colors for them to roll to make their masterpieces! They had a ball!

Valentine Party!

Our Valentine Party will be on February 14th around 9:00 am. If you are interested in helping, please contact Dani Powell. Thank you! (You may send your valentines any day on or before the 14th of February).
