Mrs. Miller @ Marine Corps Marathon

Mrs. Miller made it back from Washington DC today! It was a great weekend and race! I haven’t done a full marathon in 7 years and running a marathon over 40 was so much harder than in my 30’s and slowed me down! Luckily the reward was just as sweet! Thank you all for supporting this race and enjoying the loveliness of Mrs. Taber! She’s an amazing teacher! Here’s a few pics of this memorable race and all the patriotism that went along with this race!

Cleared?

Our most recent cleared list is posted here! Please ensure you are on it, if you plan to attend any event in our classroom or on campus. Grandparents Day is the one exception of the year, where grandparents are welcome to come on campus to participate in activities.

Please stop by the whiteboard this week by our backpack hooks and highlight your name if it is on the list. This will help us in checking who is available for events. Thank You!

Cleared volunteers as of 10-26-18

Character Education  – Generosity

Last week we had 2 wonderful lessons to teach us about generosity!

  • Our 5th grade students came in to teach us about Generosity. One of these young ladies is Mrs. Leatherwood’s daughter. They did an outstanding job teaching the students through the story of Rainbow Fish and having the students determine through different examples, to show thumbs up/down to tell if they thought the example showed generosity or not. In the end, ever student was able to decorate their own Rainbow Fish and we were given a bag of scales to put on when the students modeled generosity to each other.
  • Mrs. Deb Marich also came in last week to teach us about Generosity. After some explaining and reading to them about ways to show generosity at school, home, their community or beyond, she let each child draw a way they could show generosity. After they drew their picture they had to place their picture in the area to show where they showed generosity (home, school, community, or beyond). Thank you Deb!

Halloween Celebration in 206

Our amazing Room Parent, Mrs. Dani Powell, has rallied some help and these kids have a fun time planned for this special day! Remember you must be cleared to participate in our classroom events. Dismissal will still be at 12:30 at the gates as usual. Here is a message from Dani:

Our classroom Halloween party will be on Wednesday, October 31 from 11:15am-12:30pm. If you are cleared and would like to join us, please email Dani at Dani.powell@gmail.com. We have fun games and crafts planned for the kiddos, and would love any extra help! Just a reminder that no costumes are allowed in school that day.

PS…One more reminder about Halloween is that we are not allowed to bring or pass out any candy on campus due to district nutrition guidelines and allergy precautions. Thank you for remembering and respecting this rule to keep everyone safe!! We also ask that siblings stay at home that day to not distract from the TK’s celebration (Thank you!).

Will you post?

If you are a member of our private Facebook page, please remember to post and share any pictures you might catch! We love seeing them and it makes our page more active and fun! Thanks for participating! Feel free to share a Halloween picture of your cutie pie if you celebrate halloween. Thank you!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences are coming soon! I believe everyone has signed up and we are ready to go. A couple reminders to make your parent conference go smoothly and give you an idea of what to expect.

  • Be aware we only have 30 minutes to meet. I will do the best I can to go through all of your child’s progress and leave 1-2 minutes for questions. If there is something specific you want to make sure there is time for, please let me know when you first come in so I can plan/adjust accordingly.
  • When you arrive, PLEASE make sure you come in and let us know you are here. This is very important as we may not realize you are outside and your conference could begin late when realize you are there.
  • There is no child-care in class or at school as this is a meeting for Parents and Teachers to discuss progress.
  • We will go over your child’s report card and some of the pieces of work to explain their progress. We will spend a little time discussing their citizenship behaviors.
  • If an emergency comes up and you are unable to make it to your conference, please email ASAP and call the office to have them send me a message. Thank you!
  • Don’t worry! Bring a smile! I know some parents can get worried about conferences or feedback! Remember we are at Period 1 for the year. Some students grow and take off at different rates. Each one of these special kiddos are near and dear to my heart! I LOVE watching them all grow at their own pace and am grateful for the unique personalities they bring to make up this awesome class! Enjoy the time as we discuss these past 2.5  months of the year.

Grandparents Day!

On Friday, November 16th our school will have Grandparents Day! This is one day when the Cleared List is not in affect! We want to make sure all grandparents are welcome to come on campus and love on their kiddos!

Mrs. Ellen’s Birthday!

This past week was Mrs. Ellen’s birthday! We had an all school assembly to honor and remember her. The choir sang some fun birthday songs, we heard a speech about Ms. Ellen and we got to do an all school dance called the “Cha, Cha Slide.”

Reading Program Begins

This week we will begin a new reading reorganization that we started last year. We as K/TK teachers came together and mixed up our students all by reading level. Four day a week, for 20 minutes each of those days, we gave instruction at targeted at the level of students we were teaching. This means that each child would receive reading instruction at their level 4 times a week. We found it really helped the students and allowed them to meet other teachers in the grade, which was especially helpful to our TK’s as they will move to Kindergarten next year.

In short, we all line up outside. Students will be told which teacher they will be going to as well as have a name tag with the other teacher’s name/color. Teachers will hold up a sign in their color to help students know were to line up. Students will move to their new line and go inside for the 20 minute instruction time. At the end of the 20 minutes, students return to their normal class for the remainder of the day. The students do great and gain more confidence each day.

Conferences

An email will be sent soon to you with a link to sign up for conferences. There are a range of days and times especially since there is no school on Monday, November 12th to honor Veteran’s Day. On these days, the entire school will be released at 12:30 (just like on Thursdays). This means we will also pick up at the classroom each of these days. Please make sure you are on time to pick as we have conferences scheduled right after school as well.

I will send an email to both parents (through Sign Up Genius), but please sign up for one 30-minute slot per student. During our meeting we will go over your child’s report card and progress in academic and social areas. We will also discuss next steps in your child’s learning.

Our next Parent Conference week is in March and is only 3 days long, as teachers only conference with any families in which there may still be a concern, therefor we will not meet with all families again in the spring. Your child’s report card will still be sent home for you to review. In June, for our third reporting period, we send home your child’s final report card for the year, but there are no scheduled conferences.

Chess Club

This past Friday, we had the Chess director/teacher come to our class to do a presentation. The students were all highly engaged and interested. You also received a flier in your child’s folder that they may have told you about. Take a look to see if you are interested as all new enrichment classes are starting next week.

Great Shake Out

Thursday morning we participated in the California Great Shake Out. At 10:18 am on 10/18/18 we practiced as a school what we would do in the event of an earthquake. We discussed this as a class and shared how it would be important to get under the desks for the shaking and to cover our head and eyes with one arm while the other arm held on to the leg of the table. After 2 minutes of no aftershocks we would exit the building quickly and get to our safe meeting place. Our meeting place is the same place we meet in the event of a fire, which is located on the large blacktop in the back, by the basketball courts.

The students did great and were very brave! Have a conversation with your child about the drill and how we use drills to practice what to do in unexpected emergencies.

Fine Artists

This week we had our first Fine Artist lesson taught by Dani Powell. (THANK YOU!) She read them 2 books to help explain and set the scene for the art they were about to try. In our Fine Artists program, students will learn about 6 different artists each year and try on a piece of art that is designed and modeled after their work. Though I forgot to capture a picture of the student art as I was helping students at the tables, I caught a picture at the beginning of the lesson. Dani has a great way with the students and reminds them that art can be whatever you, the artist, decides for it to be. This was a great platform for students to feel safe and enjoy the work of art they made!

In this particular piece of art, students were given a sign that is used for communicating a message (for example it could have been a “Danger, Peligro” sign). Students then chose how they wanted to cut up the sign and rearrange the pieces into their own work of art.

Fall Festival @ EBS

Super Pledge Update

We only have 7 envelopes left to return! If you haven’t returned yours yet, please try to get it in. Thank you for everyone who has returned their envelopes and all who have donated to make this place the amazing school that families want to be at! We get a popsicle party when we get 80% of our envelopes in. No donation is necessary!

  • Lost your envelope?? – you can get a new one in the office, just make sure you mark your child’s name on it.
  • Have another sibling at this school? – You can return both envelopes for each child so they each get a pair of laces and help their classes get to 100% return!

Mrs. Taber’s Science Experiment

Our amazing Mrs. Taber came while I was at STEAM training! She will be back for my marathon! This amazing teacher brought in her own science experiment for the kids on Capillary Action!! Check it out below! She’s an awesome teacher and loved the class! She’ll be back at the end of the month!

Sight Words

Keep on playing and practicing with those sight words. We have been retesting in reading and are able to see the big improvements made by sight word practice and knowledge. We have been testing on RED Words and many kids know all their red words. Many kids only have 1-2 left to learn. When a child fluently names all 10 RED words, they get to color in their RED rectangle!

We will test ORANGE words at the of the month!  YELLOW words will be sent home at the beginning of November. The kids love playing My Pile, Your Pile to practice the words and for you to identify the words your child still needs some automaticity on.

Log In Practice

We will be logging in to the Computer Lab on Monday and Tuesday. We have a handful of students who are able to successfully log in independently!! They are all doing awesome! If you are able to practice logging in today 1-2 times, please do so to help your student become independent! Guide with your words and let them do as much of the work as possible…just as they will be doing at school! They impress me so much!

STEAM

Look what arrived today!! These are the STEAM materials that we were told we would receive from our training to begin teaching the units. So excited! The students will love this! It was so engaging!

This Rainbow Reading Log was turned in with no name. If you recognize this reading log, please stop by to claim it! Thank You!

Scholastic Book Order

Apologies for having an incorrect date on the book order. Book orders went home last Monday. If you would like to order books for October please have them in by this THURSDAY, October 11th and I will submit the order that day. In case you forgot our class code is G6LT6 in case you need it for ordering from the website (click on web address below). You can order from any grade/age from the website. There are also $1 books each month I like to purchase and save as gifts!

https://clubs.scholastic.com/home

When books arrive, we put them in your child’s backpack that day to go home (with instructions not to take them out until they get home).

Super Pledge Update

We have had many envelopes come in! Thank you for returning them so quickly! Remember that regardless if you or how much you donate your child will get their EBS shoelaces when they return their envelope! If our entire class returns their envelopes, we will get a popsicle party!!

All of these donations go to fund the many extra curricular activities that make our school so awesome and unique! Thank you for being such an amazing AFP that helps our school and each student!

STEAM Training

As you read in my email this past week I will be at STEAM Training  Monday and Tuesday. Mrs. Taber will be our wonderful substitute! I’m excited for you all to meet her! She volunteered to spend the day with our kids a week ago on her free time to get to know them and get familiar with our class routines and the schedule.

New Student

Monday we have a student who  will be returning to EBS. He was in Mrs. Offord’s class before his trip, so this will be his first visit to Room 206. Please give him a warm welcome to our class as you meet him!

Volunteers

WELCOME and THANK YOU! We have had our first week of volunteers. We are so grateful! Just a few reminders about volunteering. Please feel free to come in the classroom before school to go over the directions and see what needs to get done that day. I typically have directions written out for the day. There is also a small daily items list that you can check on each time you come. Please make yourself at home and feel free to ask any questions.

Outdoor Art

Dani Powell came in this past week and read Big Pumpkin to the kids (an October favorite) and  prepared stain-glassed pumpkin art for the kids to do. It was a hit with the kids and the pumpkins came out adorable!!

Read to Self

This is a time of our day when the kids read independently. We have been learning to get better at this since the first week of school. We have reminders we go over each time to help us remember how to get better at Read to Self. At the end of our time we use our “thumb meter” to check how it went for us. Our stamina is up to 4:00 minutes of straight independent reading.

We also have a special point to help us bounce from word to word as we read (1:1 correspondence).

Sight Words

Have you all been enjoying your color sight words? We read over these each morning and notice them in our reading. Please continue reviewing these at home and playing, the “My Pile, Your Pile,” game when you get home.

Reading Logs

Thank you for returning regular reading logs to keep up consistent reading for your child. Its super important and motivating for your child. Every 10 books fills a log and moves your child over on the reading rainbow. If you somehow are missing a new log or need an extra copy, please download the copy on our resources page.
