TK Days: June 20th – 21st

Welcome to Week 38! This post includes:  •Thank You   •Last Day Photo  •Running Club Achievements   •Summer Playdates

Thank You!

First off, Mrs. Hickson and I want to THANK YOU all for such an amazing school year! We are both so grateful for your awesome kids and all the support you all provided in volunteering, participating in school events, dressing up your kids for spirit activities, chaperoning and driving for field trips, holding your kids accountable to homework reading, and of course bringing your kids each day for the learning, relationship-building and fun! We have both said numerous times to each other and other parents what an outstanding group of families and students we were able to have in our 206 family!

Our last 2 days were very special and fun! We both wanted to thank you for the summer bag of fun! We will both be using our beach bags, flip-flops and hats while we enjoy the pool, or beach or sunny days of fun with our families!

We will miss each of you, but hope you have a great summer! Take a lot of time to play outside, enjoy your time together, try some new foods/activities and of course read some awesome books! Create a summer bucket list full fun activities, along with some productive check-offs and some acts of generosity! Make the most of your time together before we come back to school for the Fall!

Last Day Photos

The last day was so much fun! We said goodbye to our last morning routines, cleaned up our room had our last “Friday/Monday Fun,” signed yearbooks/memory books and then voted on a movie choice. The winner was Adventures in Zambezia! They each enjoyed the movie along with a snack!

During our movie, I snapped a quick shot to mark the “Last Day of TK” for each child present. Shown below are both the “First Day of TK” and “Last Day of TK” so you can download and stitch together if you wish!

Running Club Achievements

Before our year finished we had 2 more students reach new goals in the Before School Running Club!

If you didn’t get to participate this year, I highly encourage your to try it out next year. It starts at 8:15 everyday! It promotes healthy exercise, goal setting/milestones, and creates friendships! I’ll be out there each Monday as well! At the end of the year there is a before-school awards ceremony to award every participant for their achievements over the year!

TK Days: June 13th – 17th

Welcome to Week 37! This post includes:   •Donuts with Daddies    •End of the Year Party: Fun in the Sun    •What to expect the last two days….   •Summer Playdates   •The Last Two Days!

Donuts with Daddies

On Thursday we had many of our daddies, mommies and grandparents come to celebrate the love we have for our daddies! Students wrote about the “Top 3 Reasons Why They LOVE Their Daddies,” and left them as a treat on the tables. We then listened to the students sing What a Wonderful World by Louie Armstrong. (so sweet) After our song, the fun began! The kids and their daddies played Minute to Win It Games! The students played first and then the daddies got a turn.

  • The first game was stacking as many pennies as you can using only 1 hand.
  • The second game was using 1 hand to push cheerios onto a pipe cleaner.
    This was a hoot!

Finally, we divulged in donuts and juice! Delish! Thank you to all the family members that came out to participate and hope that each family enjoy celebrating those daddies we love so much!

End of Year Party: Fun in the Sun

This past Friday we went up to the Run Club Field to set up our tent, towels and wait for the fun to begin! Many families came out to join in and watch the kiddos have a fantastic time! J.W. Tumbles set up 6 stations for each of our classes to rotate through. Each station involved water and fun! After the games, the students each got pizza, fruit, a juice box and some Otterpops to fill up with! What a fantastic way to spend one of our last days!

Video of Book Share Fair

This past Tuesday, the books that we collected (along with many other donated books) were  set up at my friend’s school. She said the students had the best day! The staff and families just couldn’t believe their eyes and didn’t understand why so many people would be so generous to perfect strangers! This is true generosity folks! The kids all took home 5 books each and were elated and begin reading their books immediately!

She plans to do this book drive again next spring, so if you have more books that you are giving away, bring them by Room 206 next year!

Field Trip Recap

This week we, 13 adults and 22 kids, headed up to our Escondido destination to visit the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum! I can start off by saying this place was awesome! We were warmly welcomed by Miss Elizabeth (who was previously a TK teacher herself). She told them about the day they were about to enjoy and established clear rules for the facility.

We were then led back to their outdoor classroom! She led the students in an “All About Me” art piece in which they got to draw with markers, cut out their drawing, watercolor and finger paint a background and then glue their picture on! So much fun!

After the students ate their snacks and they explored the grounds! They loved this! There was so much to do in their indoor/outdoor discovery center! Check out the pics to see the fun! Super successful day to recap our year of full of art (thanks to Mrs. Hickson and Fine Artists).

Character Education – Loyalty

This week, Ann Tran-Lien came in to teach the students about loyalty! She gave positive and negative examples to help explain what loyalty is! Then she showed the examples using  the student favorite….puppets! After the kids made a badge that said, “You can count on me!” for the kids to decorate and wear to give to a friend. Later in the day we did some writing about what Loyalty means and who they could be loyal too! These kids are too sweet!

Book Drive Final

We finished our Book Drive at EBS to send up to Central Elementary this week! As a class and school we collected 900 books for these kiddos to take home! This is so exciting! I believe my friend Emily already raised over her 2000 so our donations will ensure that every student in the school may get to take 3 books home each (including their site preschool)! Thank You so much for giving and making a difference in the lives of other communities right here in San Diego!

Last Book Borrow

This week is our last week of Book Borrow and our last reading log! All book borrow books will be due next Friday, June 10th. A flyer will go home to help remind families. Though we all know this doesn’t mean the reading will stop for the summer, give your last big effort to get your 20 minutes of reading completed and logged each night! Let’s see if we can get everyone to return the final reading log next Friday!

Western BBQ

This week is the Western BBQ. This is at 12:30 after school like the one in December, so if you’d like to join return the slip that went home this week. The slip was due on Friday, but you can check with the office if they will still accept them on Monday morning. All the information is on the flyer that went home below.

To participate, come to pick up your child at the gate and go through back through the office to eat lunch up at the lunch tables.

We are also calling this Western Day (an extra spirit day)! Dress a little Western on Wednesday to participate in the fun!

End of the Year K/TK Party

Yellow “Fun in the Sun” flyers went home this week to inform families about this End of the Year celebration on Monday, June 20th. JW Tumbles will be coming out to create water game activity stations for the K/TK classes to rotate through. Students will likely get very wet (and fortunately its Hawaiian Day) so feel free to dress in swim wear or clothes you are comfortable getting wet. I might recommend sending an extra pair of clothes to change your TK kiddo into before they get into your car as they could likely be drenched. Students will also need a towel to dry off and to sit on as we have our pizza lunch after.

This whole event will all take place up at the Run Club field (which is likely where our dismissal for the day will be as well). You are welcome to come and watch! Sign-ups are on the whiteboard to bring fruit and a few other items for this day!

End of the Year Information

As the end of the year is approaching quickly, you’ll see there are a multitude of events, activities, etc. that will all be taking place in these last 16 days! Please make sure you are reading the blog, notes home, AFP notes, etc. You won’t want to miss any of the fun that we are about to embark on! I’m going to list some of the important things to note. Please let me know if you have any questions and remind other 206 families to read the content so they don’t miss out either!

  • Not returning? – If you are not planning to return to EBS next year, please let myself and the office know right away.
  • Spirit Week – More details will come as this week approaches, but typically, the last full week of school will have a different spirit theme in which you can dress up and participate! This week is loved by all the kids!
  • Yearbooks – Purchase your child’s yearbook now! These are great mementos, but the students LOVE their yearbooks and will be given time to sign each other’s books in the last week. ($25 balfour.com)
  • School work – you will receive a compilation of your child’s work that has been collected throughout the year. I will keep some samples to pass on to next year’s teacher. This will be sent home along with any other materials that also belong with your child (crayons, pencil, pointer, etc). All of these will likely go home in a Trader Joe’s Paper bag for your child to carry out.
  • Report Cards – These are typically sent home the last day of school in an envelope in your child’s folder.
  • Art Portfolio – Each year your child’s Fine Art Portfolio has all the pieces your child has created this year (including the piece from the Spring Art Show). Your child will also be bringing these home soon.
  • Donuts with Daddies – Similarly to our Muffins with Mom we will be hosting a Donuts with Daddies day on Thursday, June 16, 2016 first thing in the morning so our daddies can all hopefully stay for a bit and go into work just after.
  • End of Year TK/K Party – Each year the TK and K classes unite to have a final bash to finish off the year. We have JW Tumbles come out to host a field/water event. More information will be coming out regarding costs, food sign-ups, attire, etc. Mark your calendars as this event will happen on Monday, June 20th and may require our day to extend by 30 minutes (for a 1:00pm release).

Incredible Insects

This week the students were able to participate in the San Diego Natural History Museum on-site field trip. We met in the say room with 5 docents from the museum. These kind faces spoke to us generally about insects and then the students split into 5 groups. Each group focused on different aspects of insects or different insect types. The students met in groups for 8-10 minutes and then rotated to the next group until they went through every group. There was a group on Bees & Ants (Social insects), Spiders (with a live tarantula), Butterflies, Bugs and Beetles, and Metamorphosis. Check out the pictures below to check out our day.

Character Education –

This week Laarnie Chou came in to teach the students about COOPERATION. She read them a book about cooperation and then let them participate in an activity that practiced cooperation. Each child was able to make their quilt piece. Then all the students brought their quilt pieces together to create a class quilt! This was a great reinforcement in understanding and practicing the concept of working together!

Disaster Drill

This week we had our annual Disaster Drill. Ms. Sloan spoke on the loudspeaker and announced that it was a disaster drill and that we were pretending that there was an earthquake and pretending that the ground was shaking. At that point the students got under their desks and practiced covering their eyes and protecting their heads. At that point we had to wait 2 full minutes under the desk to wait and see if there was anymore pretend shaking (as tremors are a likely event in a real earthquake).

At the end of the 2 minutes we exited the classroom and went up to our usual fire drill spot. We turned in a count of all the students in our room to make sure everyone made it safely to our spot. At this point the students needed to wait while the rescue teams (made up of EBS staff) checked all the rooms to make sure they were safe. Ms. Sloan told them they could talk quietly to their neighbors while waiting. After 15-20 minutes we were told the drill was over and we were able to go back to our room.

The students did the best they ever have on any drill and this was the longest one yet! They walked out safely, stayed quiet and followed directions and walked back safely. I’m so proud of these kids!

Incredible Insects -Tuesday!

Don’t forget we have our on-site field trip on Tuesday. I got a little more information regarding how it will be organized. We will actually be on our own and the student will rotate in 5 small groups as they learn about insects. We are so excited! We’ve been learning about a couple insects as we prepare for the field trip and as we begin reading information.

If you haven’t returned your envelope in yet, please do so right away as the money will be turned in early next week!

Open House 2016

What a great event this was! Thank you for all for taking your personal time to come and visit your child’s pride in their work and daily environment. Students toured their families around the classroom to show them some highlights we have learned and created. In addition there was an EBS choir performance along with the spectacular school Art Show in which each child in the entire school had a piece of art displayed! (Special thanks for all our fine artists volunteers who not only helped create the art, but help to organize and mount student art for display!). Check out the gallery of pictures that were captured this evening!

Yearbook Sale

You don’t want to miss this! Yearbooks went on sale. If you are in question whether to buy one or not, I would recommend purchasing one for your child not only to hold on to the memories, but also as the children LOVE when these arrive in class and will be given time in the last week to get signatures! I plan to buy one for my own child along with one for myself! (I have a collection of yearbooks since I was in Kindergarten). See the flyer that went home this week (also pictured below) for ordering information!

We Have Heart Book Collection

We collected 53 books this week! What a great start! I’m hoping EBS can collect 500 books to give to Ms. Emily’s school! These books will give them reading material over the summer, an opportunity they wouldn’t have otherwise! Thank you for being so generous!

GOT BOOKS? (We Have Heart)

We Have Heart – May 2016 Challenge

Families of 206 – Each month we have focused on those who go without _____. There are so many people who live daily without the everyday luxuries we sometimes take for granted! This month we are going to give to those who go without books! My dear friend Emily, teaches in Escondido at an inner city school. Many of families that attend this school live day to day…some without food, clothing, electricity, homes and some even go without parents. You can imagine, when your immediate needs are constantly in question, items such as books are a total luxury!

My friend Emily is doing a Book Drive to share books with all these kids! She has set the goal of bringing in 2000 by June 7! I have my own goal of getting 3000! I know it can be done! The goal is to bring in any new or used books and sort them into levels (I can sort for you)! She can then distribute multiple books to each kid at the school. Imagine your child at 5 or even 9 years and not every owning their own book. Many of these families don’t have any books in their home other than a bible or a dictionary.

If you would like to contribute to the cause…ask friends, and neighbors if they have any books to give. Go through your own home library (crazy most of us have a collection of books right in our homes!). Stop by a local garage sale to buy and/or see if they would discount, or give any books not sold at the end of the day! Bring these books to our class and I’ll sort and deliver these to Emily’s school!

What do you say?…lets get our generosity going and give!

Jog-A-Thon Dance Party

Flyers went home with students today to invite them to the Jog-A-Thon Dance party! TK students had to run a minimum of 7 laps to participate in the dance event. We had a big cheer as every student in Room 206 ran at least 7 laps so we all will be dancing away! We gave a big cheer for the team effort!

Bucket Fillers Unite!

I already mentioned in the email that went out this week that we had read a favorite book about “bucket filling!” If you are wondering what on earth I’m talking about or maybe you’ve been hearing your TK student jabber about some “bucket filling” conversation around the house…here’s why! This book shares the secret to positively filling someone else up which in turn fills yourself up with true joy as well! It has made us think about our words and all the small gestures that someone says or does that dips or fills a bucket (such an eye roll or a hug, or even a smile).

Have a conversation this weekend talking about filling and dipping. Check in at dinner to see what bucket(s) they’ve filled in that day.

 This past week in…

  • Poetry (writing) – This week we started a Poetry writing unit! We have read many student poems and noticed some of the unique qualities of poetry and how this type of writing is so flexible. The students have been trying on some of this work as they tried out poetry! They are loving it! We will continue to work on this for the next couple of week!
  • Math – We are continuing to learn about shapes and their attributes. We have done a lot of comparing about what is similar and what is different.
  • Phonogram /ch/ – We spent this week practicing the /ch/ sound. We found many words that start with this phonogram. We make a sound like a train to say…”ch, ch, ch….ch, ch, ch…ch, ch, ch…C – H!” Have your child sing this to you!

Today is your day! I sincerely hope all you 206 moms have a special day! This day signifies that you are the world to your children! They watch you, they admire you, they can’t get enough of you! You are their world and you are irreplaceable to them!

Your children, Mrs. Hickson and myself thank you and hope you have a fantastic Mother’s Day! We hope you enjoy the special gift with your child’s unique touch!

With that said, I hope you enjoy these sweet faces as they thought of you as they posed for a Mother’s Day pic!

206 Mother’s Day Tea 2016

Gold Ribbon Assembly

This week Ms. Sloan held an assembly to celebrate the school’s accomplishment of being awarded the one-time Gold Ribbon Award. We were 1 of 4 schools in all San Diego District to receive the award! Students and parents gathered to hear the EBS choir sing, and to hear student speakers share why they believe EBS is such a great school. We even had a 206 student represent by reading his own reasons by EBS is so fantastic! A surprise finally to the assembly was when all of the EBS Idol teachers performed their dance. The even bigger surprise was when the music kept stopping and we had to re-perform the beginning of the dance multiple times! ….The students LOVED it!

This week students were able to attend the Jog-A-Thon dance party if they ran the minimum number of laps for that grade. All of our TK students were able to attend as they all ran the minimum number of laps. After their half hour dance period, the students each finished the celebration with an Otter Pop! What a fun day!
