Field Trip

This week we were so fortunate to visit the Sunrise Living Senior Center in Sabre Springs! What a beautiful experience to see these sweet little faces, not only sing, but engage with these residents and bring pure JOY to their faces. They thanked us over and over for coming to visit them. I was so impressed with the students and how kind and open they were to interact and share conversations as well as teach them how to play “Rock, Paper Scissors,” or “Thumb War.” Thank you to all our volunteers who came with us on Tuesday! We had a great day bringing smiles to faces and then enjoying a great day in the park!

World Penguin Day Assembly

On Wednesday our school celebrated World Penguin Day with an Assembly. The choir sang a song, a second grader read a speech about Penguins and the teachers replayed their EBS Finale dance. The kids had a great time!

Lock Down, Lock -Block

This week we discussed and reviewed what to do in the event of a Lock Down. Another Lock Down drill will happen this year and may be at any time of any day so we can practice being prepared in a variety of situations. Students each learned how to close and open the Lock-Block on our doors in the event that they had to lock a door by themselves. We also reviewed to get inside the nearest door and to close the door, windows and lights. They have done great this year in practicing all the different drills to be prepared!

Western BBQ

This next week is our last Western BBQ lunch for the year. RSVP slips went home a couple weeks ago. If you plan on attending, please fill out a slip so they can account for how much food to prepare for families that day. Please make sure you stop by the office prior to coming to pick up your TK student if you plan to head directly up to the lunch area. I will plan to bring the students out a few minutes early to let all who plan on going to the BBQ join up with their students. Look forward to seeing y’all there!

Mother’s Day

Next Friday, May 4th is our 206 Mother’s Day at 9:00 am, we are hoping all our Moms can attend. We love you and can’t wait to celebrate you and how special you are! If you plan on attending, please sign up on the sheet on the whiteboard by the backpacks!

Open House

Thursday, May 10th is our annual EBS Open House. This is a night where families are able to come and look at their child’s classroom and work. You may also visit the Art Show in the auditorium as well as visit other classes. We hope you are able to make it! What to expect: During this evening your 5-year old tour guide will walk you through their class and show you some specific items on the tour guide sheet. It is a true Open House, where you are welcome to come/go and visit our classroom and school. The classrooms will be open for 1 hour and the Art Show is open the entire night. Come on by!

In This Week’s Post:  EBS Idol, Morning Line-up, Mother’s Day, Field Trip, Generosity Bags 2018, Art, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

EBS Idol

Hopefully you didn’t miss this show! Every year its a highlighted event of the year to watch all these students perform for the entire audience! Enjoy a few pictures and if you didn’t get to come, make sure you save the date to attend next year! It’s an EBS favorite!

Our own Shreya was on stage and stealing the show! The next picture is our staff after the finale!

Morning Line-Up

This past week we had a small incident in line where one of our class members were hurt before school started in the line area. I spoke with the class and reminded them that all students in all classes should be standing in line. I reminded them that siblings and parents may stand where they would like, but students must wait in line. This is for safety as the students begin playing when they are not in line. They are welcome to sit on their number and play a quiet game with a neighboring friend if they wish.

Thank you in advance for helping us enforce this to keep them safe and ready to come inside for the day.

Mother’s Day Celebration

Invitations went home this week from your little ones. There will be a sign-up sheet by the backpacks Monday. Please sign up if you plan to attend so we can plan accordingly.  We can’t wait to celebrate our mamas!

Field Trip

Our field trip is just around the corner of the weekend! A reminder will go home on Monday to bring the following items:

  • Bring a LUNCH from home (no cafeteria option is available)
  • Wear your YELLOW Jog-A-Thon Shirt!!!
  • Sunscreen before we leave for a playful day at the park!

We are looking forward to this day! We will post some pictures and maybe video of our eventful day! Download lyrics below!

Field Trip Song PRACTICE:

I am attaching the lyrics to the 2 songs we will be singing to Sunrise Living. Please look up the songs on Amazon Prime Music (free with your Amazon account) and practice these songs with your kiddos. Some students know them very well, but others are still working on the lyrics. Thank you for all your support!

  1. Lovely Day (Bill Withers)
  2. Here Comes the Sun (Glee Cast)

We will send home paper copies on Monday as well for extra practice the night before!

ST Math

As we near the end of our school year, our school has asked that we send home the information to get on ST Math at home. This is a program that our school has available to work on. If you have ever spent time in our computer lab with us or time on our tablets, you’ve likely experienced a snapshot of ST Math. It has no words or directions, but is meant for the students to problem solve when using. We will also send home a support sheet that advises on to use at home. One of the main reasons it hasn’t been sent home with students until now, is that it is designed for the students to use independently without any help. This allows students to struggle through the problem solving process and allows the feedback of results to be authentic in knowing how our students are able to solve independently without support. Be on the look out for a direction and support sheet that will come home with your child.

Generosity Bag Day 2018

This past Sunday, my family and I went downtown to deliver the 100+ bags that were collected last month for our We Have Heart Project in March! To be honest, on the way down, my son was starting to whine to say he wanted to go home to eat since he was hungry. My daughter was sad and mopey as her friend didn’t come with us. I was going through my to do list that accumulated from losing all of Saturday due to a 24hr bug and my husband was going through the week ahead of us as he has a big conference he was consumed with. As we drove down our hearts were excited to deliver these bags of love as its one of our favorite events of the year, but our minds were in other places….DISTRACTION!

As we neared downtown we tried to find our spot from last year near a center that supports the homeless community downtown. The whining stopped, the thoughts of calendars and to-do lists stopped and we began to focus on the community emerging in front of us in the eastern part of downtown. Just a mile or two away from a ball game were these faces that were handling their day.

We drove a circle looking for a central spot and pulled off to the side. As soon as we popped out of the doors some people came up to us as they do every year! Instantly (within 30 seconds) the back hatch of the truck was popped and bags were being pulled out and handed to many smiling and grateful faces.

All the voices spoke out words of, “God bless you! Thank you! We appreciate you! You have a beautiful family!” The feeling of joy, gratefulness and love for others started to spill out as it does every time we do acts of love for others. I truly believe it is one of the main reasons we are created….to love on others! Within 10 minutes every bag was gone, every backpack gone, every snack, and pair of socks gone! We exchanged some kind words with some men at the end that all helped to take our empty boxes to the dumpster. As we climbed back into the car, my daughters voice echoed my thoughts of, “I wish we had brought more!”

With this I want to say to you…THANK YOU! Thank you for creating a bag of love to fill a tummy and heart. These hearts were so grateful and our hearts were so full! I will be sending an email out again next March to all my current and former families to take part in this again if you are interested! Thank you so much for your giving hearts!

I’m attaching a couple pictures of our day! Share these with your sweets and remember how full our lives are!

In This Week’s Post:  Field Trip Update!, Story Arc, San Diego County Fair,  Art, Star of the Week, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Field Trip Update!

Reconfirming that our trip is now on Tuesday, April 24th. Thank you again for all the drivers that are volunteering. Just send a photocopy of your valid license and insurance and I’ll give you the packet to fill out to drive on our trip.

We have been learning a song to sing with our elderly friends and will finish a craft we want to gift to them. After our visit, we will all head to a nearby park in Sabre Springs. We will bring our lunches and play for awhile until we head back to school for our regular dismissal time.

Story Arc

We have been reading books aloud and discussing the characters and the story. We use our Story Arc to discuss the main event that starts the conflict in motion and the climax and the begins the resolution. The students have also increased their vocabulary when discussing feelings of characters in the story!

San Diego County Fair

This week the San Diego County Fair sent a representative to share some information in the afternoon with some of the classes. Since they were only able to come after our dismissal time, they left us some County Fair books which include a free child’s admission sheet if your child reads 10 books.

In This Week’s Post:  Spring Pictures, Surprise Fire Drill, Field Trips, Writing – Poetry, Art, Star of the Week, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Spring Pictures

This week our school has Spring Pictures. We have our slot for 8:45 am on Monday. If anyone would like to join our class feel free to stay and walk with us. We have to wait to get called by a runner so it could be 8:50 if they don’t call us right away. Thank you!

Surprise Fire Drill

Many of you were with us this past week as the fire bell went off around 8:45 am. We have regular drills so it becomes more instinctual and automative for students of what to do, but we also have drills at all different parts of the day. The goal is gets kids familiar in a variety of situations and prepare staff, teachers, etc for these different times as well.

Some important topics we discussed when returned based on student questions:

  • What does the broken bell sound mean? Get out of the room.
  • What happens if you get separated from the class? Go to our meeting safety spot.
  • What do we do if there is a lockdown? Stay in the class. The danger is outside.
  • What if you are in the bathroom or on your way to the line and a fire drill starts? If you see the class join us, if you don’t see us walk up to our line (you may join another class to walk up with.
  • How do we know if it is a drill or real fire? We dont! We always need to prepare for it to be a real fire, until we get up to our safety spot.
  • Watch our line closely. There are many distractions to watch and siblings to see, but the priority is safety. Stay with our line and make sure your eyes are with our line without talking. A discussion or eyes to the side, could get you and the line behind you lost.

Thank you for all your support as many of you were there and walked us up. I’m guessing you may have had some interesting discussions at dinner that night as well! Ms. Sloan has us well practiced, and the kids seem to more familiar with each one, but also learn more with different start times and start locations.

Field Trips

I apologize for the delay in our field trip. I have had a lot of trouble in communication with the company in setting up our field trip. I’m still waiting to hear back. Our plan is go to a Senior Center to bring some joy and then finish our trip with lunch at a nearby park.

Our other field trip will be the second to last day of school. This will be our end of the year experience as we will be going to the Children’s Discovery Museum in Escondido for the morning. Information will be going out towards the end of April or early May with all the details. Thank you for your patience as I know everyone is excited!

Writing – Poetry

We have recently started a new writing unit on poetry. The kids have blown me away with what they could do in 2 days. We read some example poems and spoke about how it was different from other writing we’ve done. We also spoke about some of the key pieces of writing such as using the lines and practicing how to write phrases instead of sentences. I’m amazed at what they soaked up so quickly!
