Dr. Seuss Week

This upcoming week, we’ll be celebrating Dr. Seuss as his birthday marks “Read Across America” Day. Each day we will focus on a different Dr. Seuss book and dress according to the theme of the book. A schedule went home this past week and on the back of the March Volunteer Calendar.

On his actual birthday (Friday, March 2nd) we are inviting families into our class to read with the class. You must be cleared to attend. Parents will be able to join up in small groups or pairs to read with children in the class. We will having our family reading time from 9:00 – 9:30 in the morning. This will also be a PJ day where students can wear their pajamas and bring a favorite book from home (please label with your child’s name).

Writing – Opinion

We have been learning about how to write our opinion during our Writing time. The students are supported with a practice/model day where we write together about a topic. The following day, the students choose their own similar topic and write about it, while trying to work on what we practiced and learned in the model the day before.

Students are writing about what they like or don’t like. So far we have focused on choosing a topic, and writing your title. We are beginning to focus on including reasons why we feel that way, with pictures to support our writing.

Parent Conference Week/Report Cards

Spring Parent Teacher Conferences are coming soon. (Wednesday, March 14 – Friday, March 16th). These are minimum days for the entire school, therefore we will dismiss from the classroom on each of these days, as we do on Thursdays.

As you might remember from our conversations at the fall conferences, we will only request conferences from some families. Though each child will receive their report card and student work which will be sent home the on Friday, March 16th in your child’s folder.

Reading Levels – Book Bags

As we are assessing all the students right now, you may notice that your child’s book bag level may have changed. Thank you for those of you that have continued to have your child read regularly and return reading logs so that we can communicate about your child’s home reading and to allow them to get regular practice at home.

Character Ed – Honesty

Meaghan Gallagher came in this morning to teach the students more about the meaning and understanding of Honesty. She had the students play a game, where they needed to decide if the statement she called out was “True” or “Not True.” Then Meaghan the students a book about being honest. She then went on to explain that when we don’t tell the truth there is a funny feeling in your belly. She had them try on a non-truth to know the feeling of their belly. To close up the lesson, she gave them each a heart  to keep with them to remind them of what it means to be honest. Thank you Meaghan!

Valentine’s Day

What fun we had on Wednesday! I’m guessing you saw many of the pictures on Facebook showing all the fun the kids had! We decorated our bags, played some games while passing out Valentines. We finished up our day by doing “The Penguin Dance.”

A special thanks to Kristi Bidermann for organizing and coordinating this day and for the many volunteers that showed up to help us!

Chinese New Year 2018

This is the year of the Dog! This week, we had Panda Express come out to visit and explain some of the background behind Chinese New Year. They were very kind to pass out a “good luck” envelope to each of the students. On Thursday, we discussed the holiday in a little more depth and watched a short video on some history and traditions of the holiday. We sent home some special bags and color pages, also from Panda Express that allow you to enjoy a free kids meal! Happy Chinese New Year!

TK Days: Feb. 5th – 9th

In This Week’s Post: (with MANY photos) 100th Day Rotations, 100th Day Fashion Show, 100 Year-Old TK’s, 100 Year Old Writing, 100 Coins, Disaster Drill, Father/Daughter Dance, Valentine’s Day, Valentine Art, Star of the Week, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

100th Day Rotations

Our 100th Day was a day of fun! The students were broken into groups of 5 and rotated through each station. Our 4 stations were:

  • Making 100 Day Hats
  • Counting to 100 with counters, then eating 100 pieces of popcorn
  • Doing 100 exercises outside
  • Drawing 100 Day Monster

They had a great time and enjoyed celebrating 100 with their classmates! A special thank you to Kimberly Lanz, Nikita Malavia, and Rachel Chen who helped us to efficiently run each station!

100th Day Fashion Show

The later part of our day we had the 100 Day Fashion Show! The kids each got a turn to walk the runway! What a fun day it was! They did a great job showing off their 100 item collections on their aprons! A special thank you for to Kimberly Lanz and Nikita Malavia who helped set up the room and dress the kids in aprons for the show!

100 Year-Old TK’s

This was the best part of the day! Thank you to all who participated! Each little TK had creative fun dressing up like a 100 year old! They were too cute! We used a special app to forward the clock to see what they kiddos would actually look like at 100 years old! Check out the gallery below!

100 Year Old Writing

On Thursday, the kids presented their “When I’m 100 years old…” writing! We heard many funny, silly, special, and sweet writings! The kids did a great job confidently reading their paper with loud clear voices! It was a true treat! Thank you to all the families who helped their student in preparing their writing and practicing it with them!

100 Coins

How special was it to see our students return their 100 Coin knowing they would be giving meal to many that don’t have the luxury of knowing they will have a meal each time they are hungry! Thank you all for helping your child collect these!

Disaster Drill

This week we had a surprise Disaster Drill. This was to make sure that the students and staff are prepared in the event of a real emergency. The students had to climb under the desks and wait for 2 minutes until the pretend shaking stopped. Then we walked outside to our class meeting place. Once the class was checked in, I had to go to the front gates to man a post that would help be a liaison for families and help as needed filling out check-out slips at the reunion gate for parents to pick up their child. In the event of a true disaster drill I would go to my post and the students are watched by surrounding teachers. This ran very smoothly and efficiently as there are many working parts that are in place to watch students in their lines of safety, check the building (search/rescue), check-out students to help families, reunite, help any hurt/injured students. We went through a full practice of all the procedures and materials to ensure we were prepared for a true disaster.

Father/Daughter Dance

Thank you for all the picture posts from the Father/Daughter Dance this past weekend! The girls seemed to have a blast!

  • Valentine Day Party is from 11:30 – 12:30. Set up will begin around 11:00. If you’d like to help, please contact Kristi Bidermann. You must be cleared to take part in the activities.

In This Week’s Post: 100th Day is Coming!, Writing, Math, Valentine’s Day, Art, Star of the Week, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

100th Day is coming!!!

Just a reminder that we have a few fun things going on this week! Check out the reminders below!

  • 100 Coins – School wide effort to raise 100 coins per student to donate to the San Diego Food Bank. Every dollar gives a meal! So powerful in message. I spoke the students about earning coins by helping around the house, cleaning the car, making their bed, etc. See if this works for your family to help others in need. This is also a great counting activity….count those coins…..counting past 30 can be very challenging for some TK’s!
  • 100 Year Old Writing – This is due on Thursday. Students will be reading and graded on their speaking and listening during this time. Since the focus is not on the writing, feel free to help your child as much as needed for the writing, but make sure they practice reading aloud many times so they can read it without help. The presentation rubric is below.
  • Dress like you are 100 Years Old! – This is completely for fun and the whole Kindergarten grade level (teachers as well) will be participating! We hope you partake in the fun! Its hilarious!
  • 100th Day Apron – An apron was sent home last week. Glue 100 pieces of something on the apron. This is also for fun. These can be turned it at anytime with the presentation sheet. The kids will put these on during our 100th Day to show off. They don’t need to say anything nor will they be graded! This is another counting activity at home that they’ll love and remember!

Writing

We just finished our current “How To…” writing unit this past week. The kids wrote an assessment piece with no support to show what they could do on their own. We will be starting our first Opinion Writing Unit this week. These kids have grown so much in the area of writing! I’m so proud of them!

Math

In math, we are finishing our numbers 6 – 10/addition and starting a new unit on subtraction. We will start slow with small numbers to help build a strong understanding of the concept as well as practicing a lot. We will also be building in a lot of work on explaining our understanding and explaining what we have written to show our thinking about the concept. This is a challenging part of math even as they get into other grades. Many children are able to do the math problems, but explaining their work is often very challenging but a valuable skill that helps to solidify their own understanding.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is coming up soon! I know there are always a few families to like to get an early start on their Valentine’s so I like to send this out to give out an important message regarding this fun holiday of giving!

  • There is NO CANDY or FOOD allowed in any of the valentines. This is policy is designed to keep all kids safe. There are many other non-food options. Check out Pinterest or there are even a few non-food ideas sold with Valentine kits in stores.
  • Please make sure when you are filling out your valentines DO NOT label who the valentine is for. Only label the “From: ” Though it may not seem as personal it is extremely helpful to each little mail deliverer as they fill their friends bag with notes/goodies.
  • There are 21 kids in our class so you aware of how many to make/purchase.
