We Have Heart – Meals for Mexico

2017-18 We Have Heart: Giving #1

Family Food Bags

As our first class project this year for “We Have Heart,” we will be collecting food for families in Mexico who sometimes go without food! This is a class event where we try to sponsor a small community in Tijuana who have so little. We personalize our donations in special way! In past years, we’ve learned that a sandwich bag of dry food can feed a whole family an entire meal!

If you are considering to take part of this giving, it  can lead to some powerful conversations in your home about the world around us! Here’s how you can create a bag of your own:

  1. Buy grain, rice, legumes, pasta
  2. Color, draw, write, decorate….1 or more sandwich bags with sharpie markers
  3. Fill the ziploc bag with enough room to seal it.
  4. Return the bag to school by Thursday, December 7th to donate

Feel free to share or pass on to friends who wish to make a bag…the more the merrier. We will keep track of how many bags we collect in class.

-Mrs. Miller will be taking the food down to the community in Tijuana on December 9th to give to this local community

*As always this is an optional opportunity.

Thank you in advance for your support in helping others!

Thankful

We are utterly thankful for our 206 Family! This week was full and rich! Meeting with each family is a highlight as we get to spend 30 lovely minutes chatting all about each child and how awesome they are! To finish off the fantastic week, we get to have families and grandparents come together and be a part of our day! I enjoyed meeting and reuniting with grandparents! Please share a thank you with your families for coming out and for those who participated in our video! (check it out on our Facebook page)

With this week week off of school, I hope you each get time to spend with your families and take a moment to treasure all the goodness that is present just in spending time together regardless of what you are doing! Much love to you all and looking forward to seeing you all after the Thanksgiving Break!

Grandparents Day/Thanksgiving Feast

This day was so awesome! I saw many grandparents adopt a child for the morning! This touched my heart! Thank you for extending your grandparent love to our entire classroom!

What a feast we had! We set up our tables in feast form and each enjoyed turkey, mash potato, cornbread, and fruit! Thank you to our wonderful room parents and all the other parents/grandparents who helped in planning, preparing, setting up, serving and cleaning! We couldn’t have pulled this off without you!

Color Day! PINK!

This week was in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness since the 3-Day walk is hosted here in San Diego this weekend! What a great job our kiddos did on finding all the pink they could! We had a boy and girl who won for the Pink contest!

Book Fair Visit

This past week we were able to visit the Book Fair as a class! The students enjoyed looking through all the books and some students were able to choose a book to purchase that day. At the end of our visit, one of the Book Fair volunteers read the students a book from the Book Fair! A special thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to support all our TK’s in the Book Fair this year!

We Have Heart

Be on the look out for a special edition blog post this week regarding our very first “We Have Heart ” goal. As a class we will be learning about and focusing on the many people who go without the luxuries we have from day to day. Some go without health, companionship, food, homes, shoes and these are just to name a few! Each month we will focus on a new goal to help a new group of people. The best part about We Have Heart is the fantastic discussions that you can have with your child in their awareness of others and ways to help. All participation is optional, but greatly appreciated. The first goal we will work on will be coming out in the next few days!!!

Character Ed. – Gratitude

Kathleen Nguyen came in this week to speak with the class about Gratitude. She reminded them of the meaning of the word Gratitude and how it means to be thankful or appreciative. Afterwards, she had the kids pass around a bag of items. Each child that was holding the bag, named a letter from the word: G-R-A-T-I-T-U-D-E. Every time we spelled the word, the person who was holding the bag would take an item out of the bag and name what it was and why we were thankful for. Finally as we finished going through the items the students went back to their seats to write what they were thankful and illustrate a picture about it.

Take some time this month to continue discussing the word GRATITUDE and what we are thankful for!

Fine Artists

This week our students were so lucky to participate in Fine Artists where they made a “Tom Cat.” Check out these beautiful pieces of art!

Writing Mini-Lessons

We continue to review mini lessons on the areas of writing that we commonly see the students needing as next steps. These are few examples:

  • Two Finger Spaces – Spaces between words to make the words more readable.
  • Matching Picture to Writing – Making sure the picture has details and matches the words.
  • Stretching Words – This is the time we use the phrase…”Sound it out” or “stretch it out.” We have also talked about “tug and write” as they tug on each sound and write the letter that matches the sound.

Parent Teacher Conferences

We are looking forward to seeing each family this week! You should receive a reminder the day before by email. If you still haven’t signed up for a conference, please check the Sign Up Genius link to reserve a spot right away.

In This Week’s Post: Halloween Party,  Conferences, Birthdays, Art, Volunteer Pictures/Make-Up Picture Day, Grandparent’s Day at EBS, Book Fair, Upcoming Events, The Week Ahead

Halloween Party

This week we celebrated Halloween in 206! Many parents came and helped the students. They created masks, played Halloween BINGO and then enjoyed popsicles to celebrate all the October Birthdays along with Halloween! Thank you for all the volunteer help and for our 2 Room Parents who planned this day for us!

Conferences

If you haven’t signed up for a Parent Teacher Conference yet, please check your email for the link and sign up for a spot. The Sign-Up Email went out last weekend. We are looking forward to meeting with each parent to review your child’s progress and share how they’ve been doing in school this fall! Thank You!

Birthdays

November is our last big month of birthdays until next spring. If you have a November Birthday, please email Mrs. Leatherwood and Mrs. Miller prior to your child’s big day to let us know if you plan to drop by at the end of the day to bring goody bags (with non-edible treats). If your child’s birthday is during the break, please let us know if you would still like to celebrate it so we can determine which day.

Art

This week, Mrs. Leatherwood made spiral ghosts with the students. She hung them up on Halloween for the party so we could make the festive for the occasion!

Volunteer Pictures/Make-Up Picture Day

Next week our photographers come back. If you are a classroom/EBS Volunteer and would like to have a custom volunteer badge wit you photo to use when you come each time, come to the MPR at any time on Make-Up Picture day for your photo to be taken.

Grandparents Day at EBS

Friday, November 17th is Grandparent’s Day at EBS. Make sure you share the word Grandparents who are able to visit! This will be in Room 206 from 9:00 – 9:45. All grandparents are welcome!

Book Fair

The annual EBS Scholastic Book Fair is coming up next month. This event runs from 11/8 – 11/17. Our class will be able to attend as a class to preview the book fair on Tuesday, November 14th, from 9:00 – 9:30. Students who bring money are welcome to choose a book that day. In addition all students will be given a paper to make a wish list of books they want. We would love any volunteers who can stay after school starts that day to help us in this process. Families are also welcome to attend any day the book fair is open (before or after school).

The book fair has three different events to help promote and celebrate the book fair!

  • Parents Cafe – The first day the BF opens, parents are welcome to preview/purchase without their students as this begins right after school starts.
  • Family Night – This is an evening event where students can dress up, participate in contests and other activities!
  • Grandpersons Day at EBS (open at 10 am) – On Friday, November 17, the last day of the book fair, there is a special opening so grandparents are able to bring their grandchild to do some shopping together!

This is a fun event that our school looks forward to each year!
