Happy Spring and Vacation!

Let me first welcome you to Spring Vacation! This week is a time for all of us to rest, relax and relive those days before school started. As much as reading, and math are very important, laughing, playing, and discovering new interests in your child are equally important! Take this short week to enjoy your family and please do the homework below!

Vacation Homework!

  • PLAY….a lot!
  • Call a grandparent and tell them they are a good person!
  • Try playing a new game.
  • Go for a walk together and collect 3 items you find during your walk.
  • Hug a lot, snuggle often, and tell your child what makes them special!

Generosity Bag TOTAL

This was our last day of collecting Generosity Bags and so many bags trailed in! It seriously blows me away!…the amount of students giving so cheerfully! Thank you for so many students and families helping out someone you don’t even know and opening the discussion to your child about the many types of people out there each needing different things…food, homes, companionship, health, etc. These bags do fill more than the daily necessities of a home…they truly fill a heart knowing a total stranger cares about them! Thank you for being such GOOD PEOPLE doing GOOD THINGS!

Generosity Count TOTAL: 114!!!!!!!

Kindergarten Science Night

This past Thursday was the annual EBS Science Night!  Kindergartners and their parents each rotated through a series of experiments and all while having fun together! Check out many of the 206 Families that participated! (Thank you Lesley Russe for the Photos!).

Scholastic Book Order

Scholastic Book Order went home on Thursday. Please check it out and input all orders before Monday, April 3rd. Enjoy all the fun titles this month and know you can always order from any of the other online Scholastic Book Order choices. Thank you so much!

Volunteer Calendar

The April Volunteer Calendar went home on Friday. This month we have some optional Family Practice items to do on the back. This work does not need to be returned and simply is to practice and try on challenges in the area of math or social-emotional. There is one challenge for each week of the month!

Jog-A-Thon (JAT) 2017

What a day we had! This day is so much fun! Thank you to all the parents who came out for the fun and helped in so many different ways! We started the JAT with a group photo and then went up to the field for  some warm-up exercises with Mr. Nady! Then we got in line to start the JAT! We ran from 10:50 – 11:50 and then went to the lunch tables to eat and enjoy a popsicles (thank you Ali Jones)! There was lots of energy, pride, effort, and fun!

  • Donations – Will still be accepted through next Friday, 3/24/17. Our class came in 2nd for reaching their donation goal first! We received a gift card to spend on the classroom!
  • Running in Action – Our students rocked the run! They did fantastic! In the beautiful San Diego weather, students persevered to run/walk around the field! Hooray you awesome runners!
  • Volunteers and Visitors – Families came out to SUPPORT! They cheered, passed out oranges and water, ran with students and squirted them silly to stay cool! What an awesome day!
  • Pink Shirts!! – Enjoy your lovely pink shirt! These are yours to keep, but keep hold of it…there is a chance we may wear it again in the future!

You are a GOOD PERSON!

This past week, we read a lovely new book donated by the Franklin Family. The title of the book is “Good People Everywhere.” The book discusses how all over the world there are people doing good things. It goes on to explain how parents, kids, teachers, cooks, siblings, etc. and examples of good things they do. We discussed all the good people in our world and how we can recognize their good by telling them how grateful we are. If you have happened to hear your child say to you or someone else, “You are good person,” they are expressing their awareness for other’s good and their effort and they are loving, noticing and appreciating them!

*See the thank you note from Mrs. Jill (a noon duty friend) that was so appreciative of their kind words!

Noruz

Mrs. Neda Afshar came in this week, to share an Iranian holiday called Noruz (meaning New Day). This is a holiday that has been celebrated for 3000 years and celebrates the coming of spring! She came in to decorate a sample table showing how they decorate to celebrate the special day. She also read a book to the students that gave some history on the holiday as well and then showed them a short video that shared some traditional music along with seeing some of the dancing they do to celebrate!

TK/Kindergarten Science Night

Next week is the TK/K Kindergarten Science Night. During this night parents and their TK/K student are welcome to come and go through a series of science experiments with their mom and dad! Its a fun and educational date night to spend with your sweet student! It is next Thursday night 3/23/17 in the MRP.

*NOTE: This night is for TK/K students only as there are not enough supplies for siblings.

Sight Words

We have started to focus on specific sight words for reading and writing in class. If you are using the cards to play, My Pile, Your Pile (as discussed in Parent Teacher Conferences with the packet of sight words) these are words that your child should know or be familiar with. Generosity Count Update: 19

Jog-A-Thon

The Jog-A-Thon is next Friday! We are hoping many families can make it! Its such a fun day with a lot of positive energy! Wear your work out clothes and walk/run a few laps, help at the water/orange station, or spray those little runners at the Soak Zone!

A special thanks to our classroom Jog-A-Thon Rep….Saradha Nanu. She’s been on top of it and has attended all the info meetings to help our class. She has created a sign up to help cover all the items we will need for that day! Here’s a link to the Shutterfly Sign-Up:

https://ebsroom206.shutterfly.com/signup#signupSheetTab:tab=94

*An salmon-colored sheet went home on Thursday explaining some of the details of this annual event!

As for fundraising…we are in 2nd place and have 100% of our students are registered! You guys rock!

Window Art

This week Neda Afshar came in to do a March/Spring Window art with the students. Each month she comes in to make a fun craft that also decorates our backpack window! These were so cute and the students loved making them. They came up with a title for their art!

Fine Artists – Vincent Van Gogh

This week Kirsten Morton taught the class our 5th Fine Artist Lesson. This lesson inspired by the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. The lesson focused on the knowledge and use of warm colors and cool colors. She had the students each take warm colors to create any type of sunset that they want (on the upper half of the page) and then use only their cool colors to create the land below (on the lower half of the page). After drawing the picture in bright colors and lines, the students used water color in the different areas and finally they sprayed the picture with colored ink to  add a final touch to the picture! The students had a great time and learned a lot about warm and cool colors!

ABC Mouse Update

If you have been trying to use ABC Mouse with your child on any device, we discovered a glitch that a few of us were having. If anyone else was having issues using the app at home, hopefully this will solve your problem too. Ms. Martin added every lesson she could for our class, and now you should have a plethora of lessons in the “My Lessons” button. Give it a try and let me know or Ms. Martin know if you are having any additional problems. Thank you for always asking such great questions that help us realize the issues that are happening so we can get them resolved for everyone!

Green Assembly

This week we had a Green Assembly in the auditorium. This was put on by Mrs. Smarty Plants. She was enthusiastic and dynamic. The students loved her! She spoke mostly about water and water conservation that we can help to save water for our earth and to share with all the others on the planet. It was a great assembly! At the end she had them use sign language she taught them to go with the song, “With My Own Two Hands,” by Ben Harper. It was sweet and beautiful. Check out these pics and this video below!

Character Education – Compassion

Ali Jones came in this week to speak with our students about an important talk about being compassionate. During this talk they brainstormed some ideas that helped to remind us how to explain being compassionate. Students gave examples of ways that they had been compassionate in the past, or a time when someone had been compassionate to them.

Then she gave the example of how people are not compassionate they can feel hurt they might act like “Eddy the Egg,” by using hurtful words. When she first put Eddy in the water, he sunk to the bottom of the cup. Then she showed the students some special “compassion crystals” she brought and let some students say words of compassion to him and them pour in some compassion crystals for Eddy’s water cup. Then she put Eddy in again and this time, he FLOATED. The kids were elated. It was a great example to show how compassion can lift others up!

Celebration of the Arts

Thursday evening was our annual Celebration of the Arts at Barnes and Noble in Mira Mesa! It was so fun seeing so many of you there! I saw many past students and a few students from this year. I’m hoping many of you were able to visit. It was a great fun to go on a hunt to get all the stamps offered, which in turn let you be entered in a drawing for the gift basket! We heard the choir sing and the orchestra play! What a fantastic event! If you didn’t make it this year, come on out next year!

Parent Teacher Conferences Schedule

Just a reminder that next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the entire school gets out at 12:30 pm. This may affect traffic/parking. SAY students for these 3 days are only the children that go on Thursdays. This may affect your childcare as well.

Sight Words

We have started to focus on specific sight words for reading and writing in class. If you are using the cards to play, My Pile, Your Pile (as discussed in Parent Teacher Conferences with the packet of sight words) these are words that your child should know or be familiar with. If you need a new packet of words, please let me know:

I, a, the, like, and, is, see, you, went, of, play, look, looking, and, can, in, she, said (new words are in red).

This is a word that shows up in many books often! Its a great one to master to support their reading.

Generosity Bags

This week your child received a Gallon Ziploc bag to fill with many of the daily necessities that we take for granted. This month our Heart Project will be designated to help those who don’t have a home! We are creating Generosity Bags and filling them with LOVE. Feel free to add in any great ideas you may have and of course feel free to add a personal note/drawing!

My family and I are hoping to give these to many wonderful people downtown during Spring Break! Please pass the word to family, friends, and neighbors! Last year our class collected 69 bags from many families! I can tell you first hand how grateful the faces are when they are handed these gifts. Something else we found was a big hit were bags…I had many old drawstring bags from past running races, and these were highly desired as they often carry all of their belongings! See the picture below as one idea for filling a bag!

Current Generosity Bag Count: 8
