Jog-A-Thon

2/25/17 Update: We have 19 of 26 students registered. If you haven’t registered yet, please do so to help our 206 Team win the contest. We need 100% participation!

So much talk about this event! Seriously it is a fantastic event with smiles and energy all day long and your kiddo will have an awesome sleep the night of the actual event! 😉

This is a two-fold event…

  • Fundraising – This is an opportunity that we as a school raise funds to help support and maintain the academic excellence that likely brought you to EBS. This year especially (with all the budget cuts) is when we see how much our AFP supports this amazing school!
  • Fun – Hopefully the weather will be wonderful as well, but in short your child will be running/walking as many laps as they can in the allotted K-2 time period. We will all get matching shirts and take many photos. There’s a DJ to hype up the energy and and many families come out and join in the fun to help pass out oranges, take pictures or even drench kiddos in the splash zone!

This year they are using an on-line system for the first time so some parts of this years Jog-A-Thon are new for everyone. To help promote the new system, there is a contest. The first 3 classes to get 100% registered will win a popsicle party along with an extra recess! If you didn’t get a chance to register yet…check my email from Friday morning and sign up to help us out! (no donation is required) I know we have some families out of town that week as well, but you are still able to register and sign up to help our class and school!

*NOTE: If all your donations are made on line there is no need to use the envelope. They are for cash/check uses only.

Character Education – Honesty

This week we had Meredith Nady come out to speak with the class about Honesty this week. She discussed what Honest was along with Dishonesty. She did an activity with the kids where a child would read a scenario and then the class would discuss how to handle the situation with honesty. After discussing the situation, students got turns to put a block on the Tower of Honesty.

Helpful or Hurtful

Some situations have come up at school which brought up the topic of Helpful or Hurtful? We are sharing this so you are familiar with the language we are using at school.  We are questioning ourselves to help us think of others, for example, when we say something to a friend, do something to someone else or to school property, or react to something that has happened….Is that helpful or hurtful? This has helped us each to think about what we are doing, about to do, or might have already done to check if we are being helpful. It has been a great questioning system to help us self-monitor and to be more respectful of others and school property.

100 Coins Ends This Week!

If you haven’t already collected your 100 coins, you have this weekend to search the car and the couch cushions! Fill up a sandwich bag full of 100 coins (of any type) remembering that we are going to share this with other less fortunate by giving this to the San Diego Food Bank.

Valentine’s Day

We had a day of love on Tuesday! Our day was themed with hearts and love for this special holiday! The students started their day by splitting into 2 groups to play a math game and to build a snail valentine! Later after snack, our Room Moms planned some fun activities. The students made a special valentine card, painted some awesome “LOVE” art, along with decorating and writing about what they love on a paper heart and then adding it to the Heart Wall which now resides in the back walkway of our classroom. A special thanks to the Room Parents for planning and for all the parents that came in to help!

Disaster Drill

This past Thursday we had a Disaster Drill. We have at least one drill of some type (Fire, Disaster, or Lock Down) each month. The students have made great improvements on these drills.

During a Disaster Drill Ms. Sloan gets on the Speaker and tells the children to pretend that the room is shaking and to act accordingly. During a disaster drill we react in this way:

  1. Get under any desk/table (Curled in a ball, with our faces/head inward. One hand holding the leg of the table and the other arm covering our eyes/head.
  2. Then we wait for 2 minutes with no shaking. (I keep track of the time)
  3. After 2 clear minutes we walk out to our safe place (the upper playground, near the basketball courts).
  4. There we wait while the Safety Team (designated EBS Staff members) walk through the school, checking each room to see if it is clear.

At the end of the drill we walk back to our class and usually do a short debrief about the drill.

The students have improved so much over the course of this year! I’m so proud of them!

Seuss Spirit Week

March 2nd marks the birthday of one of America’s favorite authors who has greatly impacted many readers of young and old. In honor of Dr. Seuss, the Kindergarten classes will be having a Seuss Spirit Week from Feb. 27th – Mar. 3rd. Each day will have a different dress up theme to match a different Seuss book. On Thursday, March 2nd, Families will be invited to come in at the end of our school day to read with students for the official Read Across America Day.

If you are reading this, you are getting a sneak peak of the flyer that will go out so that you can start to prep for how you will show your Seuss spirit!

Celebration of the Arts

Each year, EBS has a Celebration of the Arts night at Barnes & Noble in Mira Mesa. During this event, student artwork will be show cased at the store as well as being able to listen to the EBS Choir and Orchestra. It is also a night to come together as a school community within an environment of literacy.

Parent Teacher Conferences

We are almost at the end of the second grading period as this month comes to an end. March 15th, 16th and 17th will be minimum days for the whole school. The school only reserves 3 days for conferences this grading period, as teachers will conference with some families as requested. Please mark your calendars as the whole school will dismiss at 12:30pm on these days and SAY will only be taking those students who attend on regularly Thursdays for these days as well.

Sight Words

We have started to focus on specific sight words for reading and writing in class. If you are using the cards to play, My Pile, Your Pile (as discussed in Parent Teacher Conferences with the packet of sight words) these are words that your child should know or be familiar with. If you need a new packet of words, please let me know:

I, a, the, like, and, is, see, you, went, of, play, look, looking, and, can, in, she (new words are in red).

Fun 100th Day Photos

Valentines Day

This Tuesday is Valentine’s Day! This will be a fun day as we have a few activities along with some activities planned by our Room Moms that will be lots of fun! Just a reminder that when filling out personal valentines, remember to only sign, “From: ” with your child’s name. This greatly helps when distributing 26 valentines per student. Also, we can’t have any candy in our valentine’s due to allergy and nutrition safety rules put out by our district.

Please feel free to bring in your Valentines on Monday or Tuesday and leave them on the back counter. We’re excited to be in the spirit of Love!

Rocks of Love

Yesterday we sent home our Rocks of Love. Each student painted a rock any beautiful design/color that they wished. Instructions went home in folders on Friday along with the Rocks. The idea is that you write an inspiring message on the back and set it out in a public place to be read, received, admired and passed on!

Father Daughter Dance

This weekend was the annual EBS Father Daughter Dance! The theme was Alice in Wonderland. It was greatly attended and loads of fun! Little girls of all ages dressed up and brought their favorite guy (daddy, of course) and came for a night of fun, including a photo taken with daddy, a free piece of jewelry to choose from, and a nail painting station! Check out the cute couple that left our house last night! It was a night to remember!

Check out the Queen of Hearts!

Lucky to have our NEW student!

Our new student is back! He’s recovered from illness and was back most of this week! Check out that sweet face! Give a warm welcome to him and his family!

100th Day of School

What a hit and fun-filled day we had on Thursday! We counted numerous times throughout our day! Check out all the fun activities we did!

  • Dress like you’re 100 years old
  • 100 year old Presentations
  • 100  Day Monster
  • 100 Pieces of Popcorn
  • 100 Exercises
  • 100 Headbands
  • 100 Link Chain

EBS Idol

You may have received a half sheet flyer this week regarding EBS Idol. In case you are wondering what this is …it’s a school-wide talent show! Students of all ages come and perform many types of acts for 2 minutes. Its very entertaining and lots of fun! The night typically finishes with a teacher act! Its a great opportunity for you child to experience the stage, overcome fear and be proud of themselves. Check out the flyer for more information!

Fine Artists

This past Friday, we had our Fine Artists Class taught by Tina Wang! The students each created a dog using paint, scissors, paper, q-tips, glue and crayon. Students cut out nose and eyes and glued them on. Then they drew the muzzle of the dog along with the shape of the head and shoulders. Finally they used paint to dab fur-like spots to cover the dog! Each piece came out different and unique! We finished our lesson with a comical story from the Fine Artists library that was about a Dad and a dog. Special thanks to our volunteers this month!

Stars of the Week Begins

We will soon be starting Star of the Week! Each week 2 students will be chosen to present a Star of the Week poster about themselves. Similar to the 100 day writing the focus will be on the presentation. When it is your child’s week, they will receive 1 poster, a direction sheet, and a rubric to see what the focus of the presentation will be. In addition, on the week your child is chosen, they can bring in 1 favorite book to share and be read to the class!

100 Coins

This month, in honor of the 100th Day and in honor of giving, all Kindergarten students are trying to collect 100 coins to donate. Bags with notes when home this week. This is optional, but another way that we can practice giving to others. These bags will be due at the end of the month.

Budget Cuts for 17-18  School Year

(from Mrs. Sloan’s EBS Newsletter, regarding AFP Vote)

“Thank you to everyone who attended the AFP meeting on Tuesday night to discuss the budget.   I have made a proposal that AFP fund the computer assistant (as they always do) and also supplement the Health Tech position and the Noon Duties.  By supplementing the Health Tech position, we will be able to have someone in the Health Office all day every day.  By supplementing the noon duties we will be able to bring our recess and lunch supervision back up to present levels.  I believe that the Health Tech and Noon Duty positions contribute to the health and safety of our students.   This proposal to fund these positions will be put out to the entire AFP (that means you) for a vote.  More info about the vote will be coming out from AFP.

The budget numbers that we are working with at this point are preliminary.  In order to have enough time to prepare for next year we have to make a plan at this point;  however,  please keep in mind that we will not get the final numbers from the State of California until May.

I am confident that our plan for next year ensures that EBS will be the safe, nurturing and academically excellent school that it has always been.    We have been through these tough budgets before and have always been able to find creative ways to maintain the quality of our program.  I have full confidence that that will be the case this time.

If you have any questions about the budget, please do not hesitate to contact me (Ms. Sloan) at lsloan@sandi.net or 858 693-8593.”

We have started to focus on specific sight words for reading and writing in class. 100th Day Festivities – Thursday, Feb. 9th

This next week is our 100th Day of School! Its an exciting time as we count each day. We are now over half way through the school year. An orange/salmon colored paper went home this week with special writing paper. This explained an activity that we are doing for the 100th Day.

Scholastic Book Order

Finished How-To Writing Unit

This week, we took the assessment to complete our How-To Writing unit. The students were given a topic for the assessment. Then they each wrote the steps to that topic. We have been in this unit for about a month. We’ve practiced writing steps, drawing pictures to demonstrate the steps, creating a cover page. The students have greatly improved and enjoy teaching steps through writing.

Heart Art! (3)

This week we did a couple different types of art as we enter the month of February. Neda Ashfar came in this week to have the students participate in 2 different activities with hearts. They made a mosaic heart art for the windows just above our backpacks. She also came into have the students make our Valentine holders for Valentine’s day in the class. In addition, we also completed an art project last week that was coloring the outside of a heart stencil and then after taking the stencil off, a heart was left behind!
